Basically, while Billy might have that prison connection with Crews, Dani and Billy will have that connection as undercover cops. They both know what its like to be in deep cover, to infiltrate a criminal organization and be the person their cover requires them to be. Granted, its freer than being inside prison but its also as dangerous. I think both Billy and Dani lived in fear of being found out.
And from what I've gathered from Dani's NBC bio, before she fell to using drugs Dani was an excellent undercover cop. We could only imagine the strain that was for her, to constantly be somebody else. We all know what that caused Billy.
