Recent movie watching

I've spent the past few days catching up on some of the movies nominated for the Academy Awards. Here be some non-spoilery thoughts on them.

Arrival - I liked it pretty well. I think that a lot of people made it out to be something bigger than what it was which I found a little disappointing. I'm still thinking about it days afterward which may be part of its appeal.

Manchester by the Sea - This movie has absolutely no exposition and that is a wonderful thing. Lucas Hedges is very good in it too.

Hidden Figures - Another very good movie. I found myself identifying more with Octavia Spencer's character than Taraji Henson's character, so it was a little like how I feel watching "Orange is the New Black" where the other characters are more interesting than the protagonist.

Moonlight - Loved it. And I loved it more just for the sheer fact that it exists. It's absolutely beautiful.

That said, I think the Academy is still going to give Best Picture to "La La Land"

Oz would've liked Arrival then :-)

Buffy is like that; in that I often liked the minor characters more than the main ones; moments, rather than episodes.

Hope Hidden Figures wins a lot, but then I have absolutely no idea who's up for what.

Haven't seen any of these..but agree about OINTB..Piper is kinda dull. I think she was meant to be though. The creator said she wanted to tell the other's stories and Piper was the gateway drug to sell the networks, being white and young and pretty. So they could sneak in the bigger picture gradually.
But yeah, we got a lot of Piper and she's not my fave. Real Piper is a different thing. Ugh Piper's boyfriend was the worst.
