That's A Relief!

Dropping in to report that my beloved Ottawa Charge have seized the last remaining playoff spot.

WOO HOO!

At last! I won't have to wait to 2027 for some hockey playoffs to look forward to.

comments

Not much to report

PWHL Ottawa didn't get it done in 60 today which means Saturday's game against Toronto will be for a playoff spot (Ottawa just needs a point to make it). I think they enjoy doing this to me because it seems to go down to the wire every year. I'm hoping they'll pull it out because I've got enough of the lesser of two evils in the NHL world and I really just want a team to root for.

Quiet day at work today. My nephew is coming in for an interview next week. I talked him into getting into this industry, might as well try to get him a job while I'm here. He's a good kid and I think they'll like him.

We got a call from the hospital before I left for work this morning to get my aunt from the ER. She wakes up in a panic and instead of calling us, she calls the paramedics. So my mom went and got her. I think it's a blessing in disguise since mom was fretting about taking her to visit nursing homes tomorrow. It's hard to see but my aunt can't live on her own anymore. I may need to take off in another week or so to help with the moving.

We watched the most recent part of "The Count of Monte Cristo" tonight. It's such fun.

That's all I've got for now. See you all tomorrow!

comments

Politics

Worked a phone bank tonight to get volunteers to canvas against Missouri Amendment 3. It puts a constitutional ban on abortion as well as healthcare for trans youth. Didn't get a lot of folks to pick up, but it was still fun and I'll be back in a couple of weeks to do it again.

The voters actually voted for abortion access last year, but the legislature reversed it as well as a vote for a higher minimum wage. So now they're making the abortion ban an amendment so it will be almost impossible for voters to overturn it. And Missouri is crimson red so it'd take a while to get a majority in the legislature.

It was nice to be able to be "in community" for a while. I get some of that at church, but it's different there. The vibe was more like volunteering at Pride years ago before it got co-opted by the corporations. Good times.

That's all I've got for now. See you all tomorrow.

comments

A relaxed Sunday

Which was nice because next Sunday won't be.

Did most of the usual Sunday stuff- laundry, church, grocery shopping for the week. Came home and barbecued pork steaks for dinner (I'll have one for dinner tomorrow as well). Then went to the bookstore to look at books and grab a card for mom (since I forgot to get one at the grocery store when I was there). I saw a Sapphic romance about high school football coaches, but that seemed very close to the one I just read, so I went on another track and grabbed a sci-fi book with some Sapphic elements to it. Not sure when I'll get to start it but it might be a while from now since I'm committing to read "Parable of the Sower" with a group from church. I got about a third of the way through it before, but had to stop because the future that Butler saw was incredibly close to our current reality.

Watched two more episodes of "Discovery" and I'm liking it more and more as time goes on.

That's it for now. See you all tomorrow!

comments

Fannish 50 - Thoughts on Blues-Avs

Thoughts on Blues-Avs 4/7/26
-Remember the wonderful chaos of the previous game I went to? Well, the chaos was still there, but it was nowhere near wonderful.
-Blues had an incredible amount of difficulty keeping the puck out of the defensive zone in the first. Colorado dominated with a 17-2 shot differential in the period.
-Is Robert Thomas the only Blue that can score on the Avs?
-Officiating seemed to have taken the night off for the most part. The Mailloux trip was epic and they caught it, but the crew of the Artemis could have seen that one
-Joel Hofer was the best player on the ice for the team. He actually played the puck forward a couple of times during the power play which I liked and have been campaigning for (seriously, why do they always just leave it behind the goal line for the D corps to pick up?)
-They got better throughout the course of the game, but it wasn't enough to make an impact
-Montgomery pulled Hofer pretty early in the third, but it didn't amount to anything.
-That wraps up the live coverage for this season. It's always fun and I'm looking forward to September already.

That's all I've got for tonight. See you all tomorrow!

comments

Sugar rush

It's Easter and I may have overloaded on the sweets today. We had my aunt and my sister's family over for dinner. Mom cooked up a storm. It was a delicious dinner. She made a white cake with whipped cream icing (covered with coconut) for dessert and that may have been the tipping point.

In other news, since it is "First Contact" day for the Trekkies among us, we watched the movie today. I don't think I've seen it since it was in the theater but it still was quite enjoyable. My mom isn't a fan of the Borg, so getting her to watch TNG when we get to that point in the timeline might be a big ask. The Queen was pretty cool though.

That's all I've got for now. See you all tomorrow!

comments

Another day closer to the weekend

It's practically Friday. I'm glad. It's going to take me a bit to get into a rhythm. It's April 2 and I'm already tired of people calling me about their air conditioners. *sigh*

Mom and I have been watching "The Count of Monte Cristo" miniseries on PBS. It's been quite enjoyable so far. I loved the book. It's been a long time since I've read it- I think I gave my copy to my nephew at one point when he was needing something on the lighter side. I'll have to ask him if he still has it.

My sister called to tell me that there was a playoff pre-sale happening. The Blues have an extremely slim chance of making it, but looking at the price (it would be a little over $300 for the whole series), it was a no-brainer to take a pass on them this year. Since we're going to see the Draft, I'm perfectly fine with them tanking and missing the playoffs by a mile.

That's all I've got for now. See you tomorrow.

comments

Tuesday musings

Briefly thought about going to an event with church folks but I was pretty zapped when I got home so I gave it a pass. Instead I stayed in and finished reading "Play You For It" by Samantha Saldivar, a Sapphic romance set in the world of college basketball between a coach and a reporter. I really enjoyed it and thought it was well-paced. Haven't decided what's next.

I also watched a movie that I'd never seen even though it has been out for a long time, "Crazy Stupid Love". It was okay. Very much a "guys" film.

I hope that the change of the month will mark a fresh start. I'm feeling worn out and uninspired lately.

That's all for now. See you all tomorrow.

comments

Last bit of freedom

It's back to work tomorrow. I think having a more regular schedule will help as I have fallen out of practice with some things this week. And I just remembered I need to make up my yogurt and get my lunch together for tomorrow- see what I mean by being out of practice?

I went for lunch with a friend from church today. Sort of an out of the blue thing, but it was nice to be able to socialize with someone who isn't in my normal circles.

We're clicking along with our "Star Trek: Discovery" watch. It's pleasant. I'm a little ticked that they have declared that "Starfleet Academy" will be done after next season. There were a bunch of traditionalists that didn't like it and the usual anti-woke crowd (some of who may be in charge at Paramount now) so it was doomed. Oh well, the fanfic will live on and I'll write odes to Caleb Mir and the things that happen to him in years three and four.

That's all I've got for now. See you all tomorrow!

comments

Tonight I watched "Renfield" on Peacock. "Renfield" is a 2023 movie about Dracula's familiar set in 21st Century New Orleans. Nicholas Hoult, who I could watch paint a wall, plays Renfield. Nicolas Cage plays Dracula. The movie tells two intertwined stories: the struggle of Renfield to free himself from Dracula- he attends a co-dependent support group, initially to get victims for his master, but later finds his life very similar to the other members of the group, and the story of one good cop (played by Awkwafina) trying to take down the mob.

It's a well-paced movie, coming in at 93 minutes, and didn't drag. It had a nice balance of humor and action and the fight scenes were well-choreographed, albeit very bloody. If you're looking for something on the lighter side, this isn't a bad choice.

comments

Short and Sweet

Keeping it brief tonight as I listen to the wind howl. Enjoyed watching the Oscars this evening. I'm glad that "One Battle After Another" won and that Paul Thomas Anderson won Best Director and Adapted Screenplay- I've been a fan of his work for a long time. I would have been okay with "Sinners" winning as well. I did manage to squeeze in a second rewatch of it and think that it's a movie that I could watch over and over again. Was pleased that the show didn't shy away from politics, but it also didn't feel like it immersed itself in them either (ymmv).

That's all for now. See you all tomorrow!

comments

Another year, another trivia night in the books

We had a nice evening at trivia. We didn't come close to winning but it was still fun and there was a lot of food. The theme was March Madness. One of the categories was "Concessions" and we were given bags of popcorn to eat and guess the flavor. It was pretty vile stuff. We led off with sour apple flavor which if you ever get the opportunity, just say no. There was a dill pickle flavor in there too, and I don't eat them at all, so I don't know if I liked that one or not. Banana was a mystery tropical flavor that made me worry that I ate something mango (which would have resulted in a need for Benadryl pretty quickly.) There was a very hard song category and a very easy movie category.

What I was most pleased about though was that the item I had donated to the silent auction- Rachel Reid's complete GameChangers collection- fetched more than I paid for it. There was a bidding war. It was nice to see.

I'm a little brain-fried now, so I'm signing off. See you all tomorrow!

comments

Busy weekend ahead

Got home from work and made pizza for dinner- mom had mixed up the crust before she had to deal with my aunt's crisis (she was just needy & emotional), but I didn't realize that that's all the farther she'd gotten on it, so I had some barely risen dough that was oh-so-sticky to work with. Nevertheless, I prevailed and it still wound up being delicious.

Since my mom had to deal with my aunt, we're putting off my hair coloring til Sunday afternoon. She always helps me with it and I didn't want her to have to do it when she's stressed.

Tomorrow, I start the day with an allergy shot and maybe a load of laundry, then off to yoga, then weight training, then I have to get to the store and pick up food for trivia night, then it's prepping food for trivia night, before finally departing for what will hopefully be a fun night for everyone involved.

Sunday, I'll do more laundry, go to church, get my hair done, maybe watch some hockey, and then watch the Oscars in the evening. We used to have everybody over for Oscar night and make a real thing of it, but the past few years everyone has done their own things. Which is fine.

I'd like to be able to see "Sinners" one more time before Sunday night, but I think that might be pushing it.

That's it for now. See you all tomorrow!

comments

Aloha

Mood is much better this evening. Watched the last "Starfleet Academy" of the season. It wasn't bad. Then watched the end of the Blues game and they surprisingly won (sorry for the "trap" game, Carolina. It happens.)

One of the things I do when I get a roll of quarters is open them and see if I have any of the American Women set (easily identifiable since the profile of George Washington on the front is facing the other way). They started releasing them in 2022 and I believe this is the last year of the set (surprising since you'd think they'd have stopped due to being a DEI initiative.) I found a 2025 quarter of Althea Gibson in this group, which is new to me, so I'll save that one. There were 8 others in this group too, but I've already got them in my collection, so I'll put them back into circulation so hopefully someone else will get it and want to learn things about the fabulous women on them.

That's all I've got for now. See you all tomorrow.

comments

Where'd the time go

Immersed myself in reading a bunch of Starfleet Academy fanfics and lost the last hour and a half.

Watched the latest episode of "Paradise" tonight. This season is so disjointed. They're formatting it to cover just one part of the story in an episode which is a choice, but I'd rather they at least touched base with the rest of the cast just so we know what's going on with them. And I can only take so much of certain characters so if we're waiting for a full episode devoted to them, it's going to be no fun.

Hockey game with Dad tomorrow night. They'll have a tribute video for the Captain (who has technically only been gone since Friday.) I'll need to grab a handful of Kleenex to take along.

Still haven't heard anything about choir, so I guess they still may be deciding.

That's it for now. See you all tomorrow!

comments

Times Have Changed

Happy International Women's Day to all who celebrate. I was thinking about my journey of feminism and how even not so long ago (within the last 10 years), I was still reluctant to call myself a feminist. And in the early 2000s, I would swear up and down that I would never vote for a woman to be President of the United States. (I hadn't had the Donald Trump experience at that point, so it was easy for me to believe that.) But the older I've gotten, the more progressive I've become and the less apt I am to see things the way I saw them previously. Feminism is no longer a label I shun. It's one I embrace. And the more I hear from men and men's opinions, the more I want to see what women could do if they ran the world. That's not to say there aren't women who are assholes and racists and homophobes and predators, but if we're looking for a gentler world, I'm not sure men in charge is the answer.

We had an absolutely beautiful day today. I went to the bookstore and picked up two books- "Play You For It" by Samantha Saldiver, a Sapphic basketball romance between a coach and a journalist, and "Vampires of El Norte" by Isabel Canas, which was recommended during the Snowflake Challenge a couple of years ago (because woman cannot live on Sapphic romance novels alone). And then I sat outside for a half an hour and read the first chapters of both books. It was lovely.

That's all I've got for now. See you tomorrow!

comments

Yawn

Was up late watching hockey last night so this will be quick.

Watched "Starfleet Academy" tonight. This was mostly a setup episode and had its moments, but was fairly standard compared to some of the others we've seen. The bonding ceremony in the beginning was nice. Can't believe that the season is ending next week. I like the 10 episode seasons, but I think they should accelerate the time between them, so we're not waiting forever to find out what happens next. We grew up on 22-episode seasons with reruns in the summer (at least I did) and you could do a one-off, one-on thing for series now and still call them seasons 1 and 2. It's not like there's DVD revenue that's going to be generated because not many people are buying physical media when they can stream it. Turning us into a binge-watching society and then making us wait a year or longer between seasons is crazy. /end rant

So far, the Blues have made zero successful trades because no one wants to waive their NTC to go to beautiful Buffalo. Maybe tomorrow.

That's it for now. See you all tomorrow!

comments

Fannish 50 - A NHL Trade Deadline Primer

This is one of the most exciting and also one of the most frustrating times of year for NHL fans. The trade deadline is 3pm EST on Friday and things are starting to ramp up. There are rumors everywhere and some moves are being made. Some years there's nothing until the final day and some years there are significant trades that happen in the days ahead and then crickets on the deadline day.
( More details behind the cut )

comments

Thoughts on Blues-Devils 2/28/26

Thoughts on Blues-Devils 2/28/26
-It was the Kid's Game so we were treated to a bunch of cutesy stuff during the tv timeouts, yet they still played the song about putting a boot in someone's ass. Good times.
-The JackHughes as American hero effect is weird
-There were a lot of people there in Devils gear (yours truly included). Might have been the Hughes effect or there might just be a ton of Devils fans in St Louis right now.
-Oh yeah, the game. There was a lot of back and forth action, mainly because both teams were unwilling to score.
-I noticed that with the addition of Jack Finley on the 4th line, the WTF line acronym is back in full force
-With the exception of forgetting the rule in the second, Binnington was ok. I was pleased that he stopped all of JackHughes' shots.
-I thought Mailloux played pretty well.
-I did enjoy Snuggerud and Dvorsky being on a line together
-I know Faulk will be mentioned in trade talks and his play tonight might not be a selling point
-Nobody stood out for the Blues on the offensive side
-I kept waiting for Markstrom's "If You're A Goaltender, Tend the Goal" moment, and he did not disappoint. Attempting to take a shot at an empty net late in the third, he didn't achieve enough loft to get it out of his end of the ice, and the Blues took advantage while he was still woefully out of position for their only goal of the game
-The Devils did a pretty good job of dominating play for extended stretches and overall looked like the better team
-Not an ideal outcome for the kids in attendance, but a great way to teach them about life as a hockey fan. It'll be interesting to see who on the team is still around for my next home game in 10 days.

comments

Onward

Did I have a resolution to go to be at a reasonable hour more regularly? Because today will not be that day.

I was going to attempt to sleep in this morning, but my upstairs neighbor must have gotten up early to watch hockey and was treading repeatedly on the squeakiest board in his apartment. It was not worth staying in bed.

Watched the game. It was as good as could be hoped for. A little more physicality than was necessary, but other than that, it hit all the marks. Sadly, our goaltender's stock plummeted with the loss, so we might get a bit less on the trade than I'd originally hoped. And JackHughes got the game winner which was fine with me if USA was going to win.

Went to church. There weren't a lot of people there today. Went and got my car washed after that- it definitely needed it.

Tonight we watched the last two episodes of Star Trek: Enterprise. The penultimate one was sadder than the finale, which I didn't expect. I think if I'd watched it live instead of 20-something years later, I would have been ticked off by the whole thing. And the thing that I knew was going to upset me felt completely out of the blue.

Still haven't written yet today which is a reason to stay up for a bit longer.

That's all for now. See you tomorrow!

comments

Busy-ish day today

Did the normal Saturday stuff- grocery shopping, both workouts (I thought about skipping weight training but there really wasn't anything better to do). Then watched/slept through the Bronze Medal game (was hoping that Slovakia could play the Cinderella card, but it wasn't to be). Went to dinner and then to the play my brother was in. It was good and he did well as usual.

I've done a teeny bit of writing today, trying to finish one of my WIPs, but really don't know where I'm going with it (which may be why I'd tabled it in the first place.) I might spend a few minutes after I'm done here working on something.

Gold Medal game tomorrow. Dad has "Miracle" on in the other room. I love that movie and, of course, I'm of an age when I remember the game somewhat, but what I really remember was being in church that Sunday and just wanting to go home to watch the end of the Gold Medal game and being worried that Finland was going to win. I think they mentioned the score of the game during the closing announcements. We did get home in time to watch it though. It's funny because it'll be the other way around tomorrow- wondering if the game will be over in time to get to church.

And then the Jordan Binnington (goaltender for the Canadian MNT and my St Louis Blues) watch begins. If it's not a blowout, some team is going to want him for a rental because even though he's dead last in NHL goaltending this season, he manages to come up big in big games.

That's it for me. See you tomorrow. Off to write.

comments

Wrote a triple drabble today for hardtime100.

We had game night at our apartment complex tonight. It was fun, but exhausting. We came home and watched the last episode of "Starfleet Academy." "Paradise" is starting next week and I'm looking forward to it. The first season was so good, but I don't know how they can follow it up.

Olympic semifinals today were kind of interesting. The Gold Medal game is on Sunday at 7am. Too early.

Here's the list of things I wrote for halfamoon.
