OZ drabble from last time

This is from a prompt that I got many moons ago during the last drabble call from [livejournal.com profile] ion_bond.

Fandom: Oz
Character: Nikolai Stanislofsky
Prompt: Governor Devlin: The Courage to Lead

Nikolai’s playing chess with Hill when the advertisement comes on screen. He’s seen this commercial over a dozen times, so often that the voice-over plays itself in his head.

Governor James Devlin is willing to put himself on the line for his principles.

He enjoys watching the shooting – the slow motion effect of Devlin falling to the floor, a powerful man made suddenly powerless.

Isn’t this the type of man you want in the Governor’s mansion come November?

To Nikolai, that’s all the elections are in this country. Choosing one powerful man over another and then watching as the winner eventually becomes powerless to the will of this group or that in order to get the job done. Doesn’t matter who the men are, the result will always be the same.

At least in Russia, everyone knew that the “free” elections were just illusions.

The tagline “Governor Devlin: The Courage to Lead” fills the screen as the advertisement ends.

Courage. Nikolai scoffs at the idea. All it really takes is money and a willingness to play the game.

“It’s your move,” says Hill.

Nikolai surveys the board and moves a knight into position. “Check.”

It's interesting to see Devlin (and American politics in general) from a foreigner's perspective. It must have seemed very amusing to him, especially knowing Devlin the way the prisoners did.He was hardly a "man of principles".

Yay, yay, and yay. For whatever reason I loved Nikolai. To see him written WELL is a rare treat!
