I ate my first persimmon last year (I very rarely try new food, so it was kind of a big deal) and loved it and it seemed like something that Charlie would keep on hand just because he knew she enjoyed it so much (although he would probably always offer her an orange first, just to be nice).
I think that Billy was there, but it was a completely different experience. For Billy, it was part of the job - he knew he was getting out, and that he'd get to be a cop when it was all over. For Charlie, nothing was guaranteed. But for them both, it still meant long days shut away from the world and that's what they had in common.
