OLD HABITS
“You know it’s been said that many people look forward to the new year for a new start on old habits. Are you sure this is something you want to take up again?” McManus asked.
“Yes,” Beecher responded. “It’s going to be different this time.”
McManus sighed inwardly. “All right. I’m going to approve your request.”
Beecher nodded and walked out of the unit manager’s office. He spied Keller leaning against the rail on the other side of the stairwell. Keller gave no indication that he was specifically keeping an eye out for Toby, but it warmed Toby’s heart to see him there. Toby thanked Chris for saving his life and then related that he wanted Keller to be his roommate again.
Keller’s reaction to that news confused Beecher. He nodded. There was no cocky smile of triumph that he’d gotten what he’d wanted. They’d changed over the past few months. Maybe too much to get back what they once had.
New Year’s Eve rolled around and Beecher hoped that the coming year would mean a new beginning for the inmates of EmCity. Things had gotten so far out of hand. The quad fell into segregated camps almost immediately after morning count and both sides watched each other warily. Beecher tried to keep out of it, but found himself feeling like he’d just walked into Oz for the first time with all the old fears and insecurities rearing their ugly heads. Lights out couldn’t come soon enough these days.
In his bunk, with Keller, he was safe. It was different than before. Friendly, almost. When they talked, if they talked, they kept it to the most generic of topics. Cafeteria food, what Miss Sally would look like naked, what they had to do tomorrow.
“Laundry,” said Chris.
“Laundry?”
“Might be nice to start the new millennium with clean clothes.”
“You know that actually the new millennium doesn’t start to 2001.”
“Yeah, well, for me, it starts in a few minutes.” Chris got up and walked over to the sink, splashing water on his face.
Toby watched him for a moment. He didn’t want to start the new year with Chris being all prickly from a stupid argument. He smiled and murmured, “Laundry.” He thought of that moment in the laundry room – that incredible first kiss between them.
A buzzer went off, marking the hour. Toby met Chris’ eyes in the mirror. “Happy New Year.”
Chris turned and Toby gave into the feelings that he’d been fighting for so long. Maybe this was a new start to an old habit, but some old habits died hard.
