Random Oz piece - Nino Schibetta POV

I was given a prompt at the
1_million_words community's weekend challenge which was this film noir line (I believe it's from "The Maltese Falcon" but I'm not 100% on that)- "When a man's partner is killed, he's supposed to do something about it. It doesn't make any difference what you thought of him. He was your partner and you're supposed to do something about it. And it happens we're in the detective business. Well, when one of your organization gets killed, it's-it's bad business to let the killer get away with it, bad all around, bad for every detective everywhere."
So I took it and turned it into a short non-detective, OZ piece about Dino Ortolani & Nino Schibetta.
Dino was always kind of a punk kid. I brought him on board as sort of a companion to Peter. I thought he’d be a good influence, get Peter to toughen up some. Instead the two of them fought like brothers, with Peter getting the worst of it, more often than not. And Dino had a mouth on him… he couldn’t keep it shut for a moment, always had to make some smart-assed comment, usually to the wrong person. Making a smart-assed comment during his trial added some time to his sentence, I was sure of it. I swear our lawyer wanted to clap a hand over Dino’s mouth just to keep him quiet.
Still, when I got here, I sought him out. Dino was part of our thing and although I didn’t particularly like him, I trusted him. More than that, I’d promised his mother that I’d keep an eye on him and make sure he didn’t do anything stupid.
Maybe I didn’t watch him closely enough. Dino had fucked up by going after the Keane boy. I’d later heard from Maria that he’d fucked up his relationship with Gintare as well. I thought “give it time” as if the passage of a few days was something that was going to turn everything around. I couldn’t see the threats, the Ryan O’Reilys, the Jefferson Keanes that were waiting to take Dino down.
When McManus gave me the news of Dino’s murder, in a voice that was so calm he could have been reciting the phone book, I realized that the brass weren’t going to work very hard to find Dino’s killer. This was something that I was going to have to do myself. If I didn’t go after this person with all of the tools and resources at my disposal, every con in the joint was going to see the Italians as easy pickings and everything I built during my time here would be for nothing.
