Written for the flash challenge prompt "rain" at [livejournal.com profile] 1_million_words

There were advantages to being planet-side, thought Mal, as he watched Simon following his sister back on board. River winked at Mal and whispered, “He needs to be warmed up” before walking away, humming to herself. Mal looked from her to her brother, who looked fifty kinds of bedraggled- clothes damp, water falling from his hair.

“Little sis wanted to play in the rain, I reckon,” said Mal.

“She just took off. Thank the gods, she didn’t get far.”

“I don’t think running off was her intent.”

“Well, it was either that or to kill me.”

“It’s just a little water, Doc.”

“What happens to the rest of you if I get sick?”

“Same thing that happened before you were here. Zoe and me have done a little wartime medical duty.”

“I should run a scan.”

“You don’t need to run a scan. What you need is what your sis said, to be warmed up.”

“River said what?”

“Just come into the galley. I’ll heat up some of Zoe’s ‘wife soup’. Get some of that into you and you’ll be right as rain.”

“Please don’t mention rain to me. River said I needed to get warm?”

“She said you needed to be warmed up.”

“And the first thing you thought of was soup?”

“Well, yes. It’s very warming.”

Simon shook his head.

“I could suggest a hot shower, but we’re rationing and you’re wet enough as it is.”

“River is losing her touch. Or her mind.”

“Happens to us all at some point or t’other. She got to play a minute and you got some fresh air and I didn’t get shot. I’d say all in all it was a pretty good day.”

A fluffy pink towel floated down from the walkway above them and landed to cover Mal’s head.

“Thanks,” Simon called up to where River had once again disappeared. Simon reached for the towel, which Mal clutched in his right hand.

“I’d say this was for you, but her aim’s better than that.”

“Pink’s not really my color.”

“I don’t know, Doc. I’m seeing a little rising to the surface right now.”

“Let me have it,” Simon engaged in a little tug-of-war with Mal, who refused to relinquish his hold.

“Never seen anyone looking so good when they were soaked through to the skin before. Most folks just look like drowned rats, but you… you’re even more perfect.”

“Mal?”

“I think the first thing we need to do is to get you out of those wet clothes.”

“We?”

“And then we’ll make sure you’re nice and dry from head to toe.”

“I could just…”

“And then we’ll have to work on getting you warm again. Body heat works best.”

“Well, only if it’s skin-to-skin contact,” Simon said, then blushed harder at his admission.

Mal smiled. “It could be. Or we could just go to the galley and-“

“No.”

“No?”

“I think I’d like the second option. It’s just taking me a minute to…”

“Warm up to it?”

“Exactly.”
