How about, "If he took a hit, you can't acquit!" I love it.
I'm just waiting for all the articles that are saying "Everyone involved in baseball, from the commissioner to the coaches to the players to the trainers...are all partially responsible," to change and find some blame on the fans, because we "demand" impressive stats and exciting games.
Well, that's the next move, and, much as I hate to admit it, it's partially true. A lot of these marquis players, the Bonds and Sosas and McGwires, pull the fans into the ballparks, just because people want to see them hit the long ball. Personally, I like games that have great pitching and defense and are reasonably close, or games where the team hits consistently and bats "a round" for an inning or two. Of course with the great pitching, we still run into the Clemens problem in some cases. Greg Maddux is an exception (and I'm partial, I'll admit) because you can see the progression in both directions as time goes on (he's still a good picture, but not the way he was when he was 30).
Dang, and now I don't have a baseball icon at the moment. Did you pack Nomar up for the winter?
