I'm relatively happy that Obama was elected. It's weird though watching those people on tv talking about the advances we've made in civil rights and that how all Americans should realize that everybody is equal (or something to that effect).

And yet...

Arizona passed a ban on gay marriage.
Arkansas banned gay couples from adopting children
Florida passed a ban on gay marriage.

And so far, with 22% of the precincts reporting,
the amendment to ban gay marriage in California is currently at 54% for, 46% against. (I'm holding out a little hope that this will reverse itself)

My point - we've still got a long way to go, people.

ETA - 11:00 PST - 36% reporting - 53% for the ban; 47% against.

Canadian, here. So when I say "we" I mean it, truly, in the global sense ... We always will have a long way to go. There will always be someone left behind, overlooked or forgotten. Still, we strive to overcome our failures and be inclusive and respectful. That's what we must do.

I don't know what Obama's position is on gay rights. Perhaps, he will be more sympathetic and supportive once he is actually at the helm.

I agree completely. All these results are tainting what should be *change*. So disappointing.

Since the other choice was... BAD, I'm *extremely* happy that Obama won. And it IS a huge step in the better direction for civil rights... but you're right, it seemed like everyone was caught up in the presidential election & a lot of the other 'races' were overshadowed. I know I felt entirely sick to my stomach when the emails from my activist groups arrived this morning. BOO! A long way to go, yes. [livejournal.com profile] lalioz posted something earlier, about America being the land of the free because it's the home of the brave... we'll keep slogging. I liked what Obama said about living for a century and seeing what changes came about in those years. My point - I'm still hopeful.

I hate that things like same sex marriage and same sex adoptions are still issues in 2008. It doesn't speak well for our country, and it is ironic that this comes at the same time as Obama's victory.
