Since New Boston wasn’t Alliance, but rather held its own set of rules, Simon allowed River to accompany Mal to the exchange.

“Those are our men now,” Mal pointed out. “That’s French. I don’t know who the other guy is. Must be new.”

“Wild card,” stated River. “Not what he seems.”

“Is there going to be a problem?”

“Not for us. No action to be taken without his boss.”

“You might want to lay off the cryptic when we’re doing the deal.”

“Affirmative.”

This was just to be a routine exchange of goods for cash, but Billy didn’t like the way the girl was looking at him. It was as though she could see inside of him. Beyond the face that he showed to Costello, to Dignam, to Queenan. She could see his mother’s son and it unnerved him.

He was still a little shaken up when he and French returned to the car. “Looks like she was a little taken with you,” said French.

“You think?” asked Billy, absently.

“Don’t get so excited. You ain’t that good-looking, kid. Anyway, skirts like that are nothing but trouble. Only good to prove you ain’t a queer. Then again, Billy, maybe you should have taken her up on it.”

“Nah, you’re right. She’d have been trouble.” Billy considered that he should make a note of this meeting for Queenan. Something wasn’t right here.

“Well, I’ll be damned,” said Queenan, upon seeing the man walk through the door.

“Not so sure, Captain, but I don’t think that’s the proper greeting one should make for a Shepherd,” Dignam remarked.

“Nonsense.” Queenan clapped Book on the shoulder. “It’s good to see you-“ He paused as dozens of names of UCs for the past thirty years flitted through his mind.

“Derrial,” said Book, introducing himself to Dignam. “Shepherd Derrial Book at your service.”

“He was my first undercover.”

Dignam looked at Book with a new appreciation. “This is the guy that brought down Sebastian?”

“The very one.”

“What are you doing here?”

“The ship I travel with stopped to get supplies. We’ll be off again by nightfall.”

“You’re taking precautions?” Queenan asked.

“You never change, Officer.”

“It’s Captain now,” clarified Dignam.

“Some things have changed,” said Queenan with a smile.

“I’m fine, Captain. I’ve a new life and it isn’t a bad one.” The communication device on Queenan’s desk buzzed. “I’ll leave you to your business,” said Book, shaking Queenan’s hand before leaving the office.

Dignam hit a button next to the speaker. “Hello, sweetheart.”

Billy’s anxious voice came through the speaker. “There’s a girl here who might cause some complications.”

“See you at dock fifteen in twenty minutes. Don’t do anything stupid,” said Dignam.

Dignam pulled on his coat. “Girl. He’s probably overreacting.”

“Probably,” replied Queenan. “Be careful.”

Dignam nodded and left. Queenan realized that in thirty years, some things didn’t change.
