Fandom: Mad Men
Characters: Don Draper and Bertram Cooper
Rating: PG
Spoilers: Everything up to the episode "Seven Twenty-Three"
Prompt: Would you say I know something about you?
A/N: Dick’s POV. Dialogue comes directly from the episode "Seven Twenty-Three" which was written by Matthew Weiner and Andre Jacquemetton.

When you enter his office, Cooper is there. It’s not a surprise. What is a surprise is that Cooper is sitting in Don’s chair, as if he needed that psychological edge to reinforce his position over you.

Bert starts sprouting some nonsense about Sacagawea. You’ve grown so accustomed to his ramblings over the years that you tune it out until he gets to the point. And when he says, “Now’s the time to pay us back”, you think about that moment in the room with Pete, when he said, “Who cares?” or letting Duck know that you were so close that contracts were unnecessary. You’ve gotten so used to living life on your own terms that you’ve forgotten what it’s like to be trapped.

“Would you say I know something about you, Don?”

And Don, that bastard, actually smiles as you feel the noose slipping around your neck. You were safe here as long as they didn’t try to hold you. The rope seems to tighten and Don takes over, saying, “I would.”

Cooper holds out a pen. “Then sign it. After all, when it comes down to it, who’s really signing this contract anyway?”

You try to draw breath into your lungs but it isn’t coming. You just want to shout at him, That’s just it! He’s content to be owned, to be stuck in this life answering to the agency, to clients, to his wife. You are not.

All you can do is blink.

Don says something about not having any more contact with Sterling. It’s an empty directive, one issued just so he feels like he’s still in control. It won’t work. You know that.

The last thing your eyes see is his hand writing that signature – Donald Draper – on the contract and the date.

7-23-63.

The day you die.
