ayumie for the kick in the pants I needed to get this going again. It’s been a while. If you feel the need to catch up and don’t want to go back to the beginning, starting at Chapter 16 will get you up to speed for this (although if you want to go back to Chapter 1, I won’t stop you.)

“What did you want to be when you grew up?” Ryan asked.
“Me? An actor. They make shitloads of money.”
“Can’t let those matinee idol looks go to waste.”
Dino laughed. “Something like that.” He trailed his fingers down Ryan’s arm. “What about you?”
“Well, first I wanted to be a fireman. And then, an astronaut. And after that, I just wanted to be…”
“What?”
“Nothing. I don’t wanna waste time on that.” He turned his head slightly and captured Dino’s lips with his own.

Dino was sure there were people out there who thought that “going to the mattresses” was something that only existed in “The Godfather”.
Not so.
Nino’s abandoned apartment building came in handy during times like this. It was a safe space – one that nobody outside the family knew about.
Well, almost nobody.
He didn’t bother with the blankets that were in a third floor closet. He wanted to feel the hard floor under his body. He wanted to feel the breeze coming through the open window, ghosting over his body like a lover’s touch.
He wanted everything like it was that night.

“And this one?” Dino asked, touching the scar on Ryan’s chin.
“Oh, that was from a particularly harsh wrestling match with Cyril. I was in the second grade, he was in kindergarten. I told the kids at school I got it in a knife fight with a high schooler.”
“Did anybody believe you?”
“Three or four of the girls. They thought it was tough.”
“The guys thought you were full of shit, didn’t they?”
“Maybe. None of them would come near me after that. My turn.”
“I think…”
“Shh.” Ryan leaned back and gave Dino a very thorough once-over. “Hmm. What about…?”
“I don’t have a scar there.”
“Pity.”
“You could still kiss it and make it better.”
“Yeah?”
“If you want.”
“Oh, I want.”

Checklist of things to do:
Send Ginny away.
Check.
Beat the ever-living crap out of Petey.
Not yet.
It wasn’t that he hadn’t had the opportunity. He’d reported back to Peter almost immediately after the incident, but said nothing.
Maybe he could hold out hope that one of Cyril O’Reily’s stray bullets would catch the little shit.
Framing Peter’s hit on the Bridget Street Gang would be fairly easy at this point. Nino would believe it and it would kill two birds with one stone.
Dino smiled and went back to his checklist.
Make sure he didn’t kill Ryan.
Check.
Wonder if he liked the flowers? Dino had only been in the hospital room for a moment, catching a glimpse as Ryan lay on the bed, face ash-white in the light of the room, the steady beep of the monitors of the patient in the next bed, the only sound. He’d wanted so much to sit at Ryan’s side, to brush the hair away from his face, to whisper “I’m sorry” until he knew Ryan believed him.
Instead he’d slunk off like a coward.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
“Ryan? I was your first, right?”
“What the fuck, Dino?”
“Well, prison, you know. Shit goes on.”
“I’m no fag.”
“Right.”
“Wait a minute. Did something happen with you in Juvie? Is that why you’re bringing this up? Seriously, Dino, you could have said something before you put your mouth on my dick.”
Dino laughed.
“What’s so fuckin’ funny?”
“I don’t know.” Dino laid a hand against Ryan’s face and leaned in.
Ryan turned away. “You’re not kissing me until you answer my question.”
Dino sighed, waiting a moment before whispering “No.”
“No, you won’t answer my question?”
“No, there weren’t any men before you. And there won’t be any men after you. I promise you that.”
“You are the most faithful guy I know.”
“Ryan.”
Ryan shrugged. “Well, I’ve never really believed in the ‘forsaking all others’ thing, but I ain’t a fag, Dino. You don’t have to worry.”
“Can I kiss you now?”
“Please.”

Fools.
They were fools. Pretending they were something they weren’t, something they had no right to be.
As soon as they left this room, “they” no longer existed. Just Ryan and Dino, each going his own way in the world.
It couldn’t end well. They both knew that.

“Sun’s coming up.”
“I know.”

Dino was so caught up in his memories that when he heard the footsteps outside the open doorway, it was too late. As he reached for his gun, he heard a voice say, “Drop it.”
Turning around, he saw two police officers standing in the doorway. They patrolled here sometimes. It usually took a bit of cash, but it was a manageable situation. He rose to his feet with a smile. “Hello, Officers.”
“Dino Ortolani?”
He stiffened. How the fuck did these cops know who he was?
“You’re under arrest for the murder of Patrick Callahan and the attempted murder of Ryan O’Reily.”

Date: 2009-07-11 09:17 pm (UTC)Thank you for the shiny new chapter. Poor Dino - it's not like he didn't have it coming, but still. Loved the flashbacks!

Date: 2009-07-12 12:32 am (UTC)I'm a bit of a romantic at heart, hence the flashbacks before the onslaught of angst.
Thanks so much for reading and getting me motivated on this!

Date: 2009-07-18 06:10 pm (UTC)This whole thing between Dino and Ryan is one of my favourite rarely explored stories in Oz! I remember you've asked me about which season 1 storylines I miss from fan fiction the most - this would've been one if you wouldn't have already written it. And you've written it so wonderfully!
And I always liked to see them in their pre-Oz state, especially Ryan. Their life is not easy at all, but they are still so young and free and pretty and before all that twisted sad stuff that happened in Oz. I love background stories like this, you captured the characters so very well!
And I liked this chapter very much. I absolutely loved the contrast between the flashbacks and the harshness of the present. You know, even though we all know how it'll end in canon, it's still so heartbreaking to read "It couldn’t end well. They both knew that.". It's such an epic and bittersweet story. Poor Dino and Ryan -- it seems like they really haven't got any chance against fate.
Thanks for writing this!

Date: 2009-12-31 04:31 am (UTC)I'm really glad you enjoyed this fic. I do have more to add to it, I just need the time to edit it, but I plan on getting all the way to the canon end. And I really love Dino a lot so that ending is going to be hard to write.
Fiction-wise there isn't a whole lot of season one work out there. (Most of the fandom 'ships Beecher/Keller and he doesn't show up until Season Two and a lot of what I write is after Season Three), but if you want to give me a prompt for something you want to read, I'll do my best to write it.

Glad you're hooked - IMO, Season Two is interesting, S3 is excellent, and the first half of S4 is phenomenal. Enjoy!
