Ed drives to Bisbee, knowing that it's a mistake. He doesn't have to see them after all. Seeing them would cause more trouble than it's worth. He just wants to check in on them, make sure they're still okay, make sure they're still together. It's been on his mind these past few months. Has Bud's arm healed? Is Lynn running that dress shop that she'd talked about? Is her hair still blonde or has it changed back to her natural color? Is she still beautiful?
Is Bud?
Has Bud found a place to work? Is he bored out of his mind and dreaming about going back to L.A.? Does he think about Ed at all? Does he think about the two of them together, how in sync they were, if only for a moment?
God knows Ed does.
He spies Bud walking down the main street, slow and deliberate, with a slight hitch in his step. Bud looks worn and tired, until Lynn comes out to greet him in front of the dress shop, then the smile lights up his face, and he transforms.
Ed is taken back to one of those nights, when he and Jack Vincennes were on stakeout outside of Lynn's home. Bud, sitting on the couch, Lynn's feet in his lap, looking more relaxed and at home than Ed had ever seen him. That was the moment Ed knew he was in trouble.
From a distance, Ed watches the two of them together, and it answers a question that had dominated his mind all the way up here- is there still a place for him in their lives?
He turns the car around and drives back to L.A.
