Pairing: Ryan O’Reily/Dino Ortolani
Rating: R
Word Count: 666 (seriously!)
A/N: Wow, it's been a while. Thanks to everybody who has stuck with this. I've got most of it fleshed out up until Ryan gets to Oz, so it'll be coming in bite-sized pieces as I edit it.

“…don’t know how you can continue to live like this.”
Ryan winced as he continued filling out discharge papers. He was tired and Aunt Brenda was making it worse.
“You two are past twenty now, grown men. You have a wife. Do you want to make her a widow like that nice Peggy Callahan?”
Ryan smirked. One thing Patrick’s wife could never be described as was “nice”.
“That poor woman. One day at home with her husband and son, the next a widow.”
“What happened to Patrick was a damn shame.”
“You’re to blame for it. You and your brother. If you hadn’t…”
“No, the motherfucker that pulled the trigger is to blame for it.” Ryan’s thoughts drifted for the hundredth time that hour to Dino Ortolani. Had the police picked him up yet? Or had Cyril…
At that moment, Cyril swung into the room. He bent down and kissed Brenda on the cheek. “Hi, Aunt Bren.”
“Don’t you ‘Hi Aunt Bren’ me, young man. I told your brother and I’ll tell you…”
Cyril ignored her and asked Ryan. “You about outta here?”
“God, yes. Did you…?”
“I’ll tell you in the car.”
Ryan barely managed to contain his frustration. “All right.”

Dino held his hand out to be fingerprinted. He’d been through this once before when he got nabbed for possession. They didn’t have anything. The gun was long gone – there were no bystanders on the street, except for O’Reily and with everything that went down between them, he doubted Ryan would talk.
So who could it be then? Peter? Schibetta was many things, but it wouldn’t benefit him any to rat out Dino. Maybe one of the lower level guys trying to make the step up on the crew.
“Turn to the right.”
Dino turned so they could snap his mug shot. He just wanted to get this part of the process over with so he could find out who tipped off the cops.
One thing was for sure. There was no way Cyril O’Reily would be able to touch him right now.

“I waited outside Ortolani’s house all night and nothing.”
Ryan slowly let out the breath he’d been holding. “Fuck. What about the others? Schibetta, those two fat guineas that work with them?”
“Those dinks can barely run a race, let alone a hit like this. No, this is direct and smart and that means Ortolani.”
“But Di- whole crew needs to be eliminated.”
“Without Ortolani, the crew falls apart. You and I both know that little Peter Schibetta isn’t anything like the old man.”
“Too true, but…”
“We can go hit them all right now if you want. Especially since we can’t get to Ortolani.”
Ryan closed his eyes. Oh, thank God. “He could still turn up.”
“He did. At five this morning at the police station.”
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Peter picked up the telephone. “Hello?”
“Listen up. This is my one phone call.”
“Holy shit. Where are you?”
“The south of France. One phone call, Petey. Where the fuck do you think? I got pinched for some bullshit involving Ryan O’Reily. Might be in your best interest to call one of your legal minds to get me out of this. Now.”
Peter hung up the phone and sighed. This was all he needed.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
“Are you hurt?” Shannon asked.
“No.” I was thinking about Dino and then you had to open your trap. Again.
“I made you some dinner.”
“That’s nice.”
“Why’d you send me to Brenda’s? You know I can’t stand that sanctimonious bitch.”
“It wasn’t safe for you at home.”
“And it’s safe now? I’ve got my big bad husband here to protect me.” Shannon straddled his lap, wrapping her arms around him.
“Don’t you forget it.” He pulled her forward, kissing her. It was familiar, something he’d done a million times in between hundreds of other girls. Shannon was familiar, someone that he would come back to again and again.
But she didn’t feel like home anymore.

Date: 2010-12-24 12:34 am (UTC)ryan/dino - an interesting pairing (not much a fan of b/k, did not really like either character)
I just loved the road trip - dino died way too soon & petey died way too pointlessly (seriously the evil eye plot was interesting as season six dealt a lot with the supernatural) in universe and there aren't that many fics on them either:(

Date: 2010-12-24 02:23 am (UTC)Thank you! The fic is still alive - there is a good portion of it languishing in a file right now, still waiting for me to properly edit it.
I'm glad you enjoyed the pairing. I love them more and more as time goes on and I think that's part of the reason that I'm delaying - the eventual descent into canon that will take Dino away once and for all.
I don't mind B/K, but they have a tendency to take over the fandom and with the show being so ensemble-focused, I actually prefer to read and write about other characters.
The road trip was one of my favorite parts to write because I just love those few and far between moments that Peter seems to get ahead for a moment (sadly, I also feel the need to slap him down to earth as much as Fontana ever did).
Welcome to the fandom!

Date: 2010-12-25 04:23 am (UTC)It's great that you give even the most marginal characters some limelight, like Ginny and Maria as well as the fanon family dynamics because I would have liked to see them more explored in the actual show. I do wonder though, is Nino's favoritism towards Dino real or just "sibling rivalry"? Canonly, I thought he prefered Joey.

Date: 2010-12-26 05:09 am (UTC)I imagine that Joey's been around since Nino went to prison, so he may have already been the second-in-command in the prison system - some of the qualities that made Dino an asset out on the street may have made him a bit of a liability when it came to prison, so Nino may have been reluctant to trust him with more than the kitchen.
It's interesting watching the first two episodes over and over again because there's really so much we learn about Dino in just about twenty minutes of action and dialogue. I based the character of Maria on Peter's line (after Dino's death) about her wanting revenge. It says so much about her relationship with Nino and her understanding of the reality of the life her son was part of. I do love writing both her and Ginny because so little has been written about them (and Rosalie - yes, I'd love to read anything you write about her) that I have the opportunity to shape some of the fanon where they're concerned.
