He sat in a little room adjacent to the courtroom, waiting for the district attorney to call him as a witness. Dino was in there. Dino was less than a hundred feet away. One step through the door and Ryan would see him again.
This was not the way he envisioned their reunion.
I wish he’d let me talk to him. I could have explained about Cyril, about why I was doing this.
Instead, I’m in here, wondering if those orange daisies were really meant for me. Maybe they weren’t. Maybe I imagined them, and the only thing real was that that bastard shot me.
He shot me. He killed Patrick. And I don’t want him dead? What the fuck is wrong with me?
“Mister O’Reily, they’re ready for you.”
Ryan stood up, brushed off his pants and walked toward the open doorway.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Ryan took the oath and then sat down in the witness chair.
Dino refused to meet his eyes. Look at me, damn it!
“State your name for the record.”
“Ryan O’Reily.”
Dino flinched. It was slight, but still enough for Ryan to notice.
Oh god, I don’t want to do this anymore.
“Mister O’Reily, answer the question.”
“I’m sorry, what?”
“Describe the events of September 17 of this year.”
Cyril is outside. Waiting. If Dino comes out of this courthouse…
Dino’s eyes raised to meet Ryan’s. Ryan stared for a moment, then closed his eyes. When he opened them again, he directed his gaze on the district attorney.
“I went to work like usual. After work, my business associate, Patrick Callahan and I decided to go get some drinks at Hannigan’s. We stayed there for a couple hours until say ten o’clock, then we headed out. I had a flask and was taking a drink and then I heard the shot and Patrick had fallen. I looked up in the direction of the shot and I saw a man coming toward me, holding a gun.”
Ryan’s eyes returned to Dino, who leveled him with his usual challenging glare. If they were anywhere else other than a courtroom, Ryan would have been on him in a second.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Dino saw O’Reily subtly shifting in his chair. He smirked. I could take care of that for him. Someone in the gallery coughed and he snapped out of it.
Jesus, Ginny’s sitting right behind me. What the fuck is my problem? I’m over you, O’Reily. I’m. Over. You.
Ryan took that moment to bite his lower lip.
Oh, for fuck’s sake.
Why does he look like somebody drowned his puppy? And why do I want to go over there and lie to him and tell him everything is going to be all right?
My lawyer gets up and I take the opportunity to look at Ryan. Maybe I should have met with him because after two months of nothing, this is sheer torture. It would have been easier if I had killed him or he had killed me. Because sitting here not being able to talk to him, not being able to touch him, it’s destroying me.
How do you like that, O’Reily? You finally got to me. More deadly than any bullet. Look at me, damn it.
He glances over, holds eye contact with me. It takes us both a moment to get back to the question at hand.
“Mister O’Reily, was your relationship with Dino Ortolani always antagonistic?”
What the fuck kind of question was that?

Date: 2011-03-08 06:53 pm (UTC)I still am feeling so bad for both of them-I want them to escape the courthouse and get the fuck away from all those people.
It's obvious they both have feelings for each other, and not just sexual ones(though of ocurse those are there, too).
Just the fact that Ryan still cared even after what happened with Patrick, and Dino still wanted to go up there and tell him everything would be alright(with Ginny sitting behind him),and telling Ryan silently that he got to him shows that.
And I laughed at Dino saying he was so over Ryan-until Ryan bit his lip.
Interesting last line-I can't wait to hear exactly what the lawyer meant!

Date: 2011-03-17 03:57 am (UTC)These two are so much fun together. I like looping in a bit of the internal fluffiness to go with all the angst that I'm serving them.
I'm glad you're still enjoying this!
