I feel that a more a story is tied into certain canon and character touchstones that it's much more grounded in the universe and I'm more willing to go through the rabbit hole with the writer at that point because it's apparent that they know the world. Even if I'm writing and the story is devolving rapidly into crack, I try to sneak in one or two canon "a-ha!" moments just to make it more fun for the reader as well.
