So I had the benefit of a gift card & some Christmas cash when I went on my little romp through the aisles of the Target DVD department. I was going there to get one very specific thing (the Firefly complete series) and then I thought it would be cool to get some movies about writers - Wonder Boys, Barton Fink, The Hours (you get the picture). Except that there didn't seem to be any movies about writers there. So here's what I picked up instead:
Firefly, the complete series - trust me, the whole trip would have been abandoned if that wasn't there.
Miracle - A great sports film, with wonderful classic rock music in the background, and it's really uplifting. Did I mention it was about hockey? And I have an intense love of watching people train for things, be it sports or the military, so that I can live vicariously through them for a short while.
The Italian Job - (the new one) - I think I watched this movie about 100 times on Showtime (when I had cable). And I have a nearly insane love for Mos Def
Animal House - Enough said.
Exotica - Wonderful independent film about sex and jealousy. I saw it when it was in theaters what seems like ages ago, and have been wanting to pick it up for months now. It was like hearing the Sirens' call from the shelf - "Pick me up. I'm under $10. You know you want me." So, yes, I finally succumbed.
Cool Hand Luke - Like prison movies? This is one of the best ever made. Trust me on this one. And yes, I will look to see if there are any "Oz" parallels when I watch it. For those who like "Shawshank", it's a direct descendant to this movie.
Guys and Dolls - My favorite movie musical (until they can make a version of "Les Misrables" that doesn't screw it up). When I was growing up, it ran on Cinemax almost every other day and I memorized most of the lines and a lot of the music. And since it's on DVD, I can skip all the parts that annoy me. Hooray!
The Day the Earth Stood Still - In my opinion, one of the greatest SciFi movies ever made. And the anti-war message rings true even today.
In other news, I discovered that my Oz Magi story doesn't suck quite as bad as I had originally thought. I actually managed to salvage quite a bit of it. Now only thirty four hours to find that ending. I'm not too worried, but we'll see how I feel in thirty-three.
