Day 5
In your own space, promote three communities, challenges, blogs, pages, Twitters, Tumblrs or platforms and explain why you love them. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.
1) The
1_million_words community is a group of writers and graphic makers that aspire to as a community write toward a certain word goal. (In 2018, that goal was 6 million words.) The community offers a variety of challenges – one that changes every month, a number challenge, an A-Z challenge, a Friday quote challenge, a word of the day challenge, and a weekend challenge devised by a different volunteer each week. Words or graphics count toward the end goal- in the case of graphics, a picture, be it a wallpaper or an icon, is worth 1,000 words.
What I love is the support of the community. Whether you write a little or a lot, there’s always someone to cheer on your efforts. It’s a great place to play. Lurkers are welcome- I lurked the community for about six months before delving headlong into it last year. It’s a great community and it can do wonders for your creative output.
2. The next place I want to talk about is only available for 2 weeks out of the year. The
halfamoon fest celebrates women characters in television, film, books, and plays. Prompts are given over the first two weeks of February and you can create a woman-centric piece of art or fiction during that time. Last year, they had a mini-moon fest instead of the regular fest at the beginning of March, but they’ve said that they will go back to the regular fest this year. And if your creative juices are in hibernation during that period, there are posts for discussion/love for women characters as well as a place to recommend works that other creators have made about women. I will probably put up an alert on my LJ when the fest is running this year.
3. Finally, there’s a community that’s been near and dear to me since I’ve been on LJ (full disclosure, I’m now a moderator for it) and that’s
hardtime100. The focus of this community is the HBO prison drama, OZ, and each month, challenges are posted for it – there are usually two drabble challenges and one flashfic challenge each month. If you’re not wild about the monthly challenges, it’s okay. There are almost sixteen years worth of prompts for you to choose from. All prompts are fair game, there’s no hard-and-fast 100 word rule for the drabbles so if you go a little over, there’s just that much more to love. Take a peek at the work some of our authors have submitted or dive in an tackle a prompt yourself. I’d love to see you there.
