Written for the ladiesbingo prompt "Humiliation" (it's more of a feeling & not a kink here).

Title: Bubblegum Pink & Dusky Rose
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1220
Summary: Dani runs into Edrisa at a wedding

Two more hours, Dani thought. Two more hours and then Antionette and Carter would be headed for their honeymoon and this nightmare of a dress could be dropped off at the nearest second-hand store. At least she was lucky enough that...

“Imagine seeing you here! And not a dead body in sight.”

Oh dear god, her humiliation was complete. Standing before her was Edrisa from the Medical Examiner's office.

“Hey.”

“I never expect to run into anyone I know at one of these events. I always wonder, but it never quite pans out, and, that is quite the dress.”

“Antionette picked it out.”

“I mean it's a nice dress if you like... ruffles. And yellow.”

“At least it's not bubblegum pink,” Dani said, feeling some need to come to her cousin's defense.

“I like pink,” said Edrisa, who'd worn a dignified navy blue suit for the occasion. “I have a set of scrubs in that color.”

“If it works for you, that's great.”

“Yeah, it probably wouldn't work with your coloring.” She stepped back and narrowed her eyes at Dani. “You're more of a... dusky rose, if we're going that route.” She caught a look from Dani and hastily amended, “Which apparently we're not so forget I said anything.”

“Okay.” Dani said, looking around for somebody that she could step aside and talk with. Most of the people she knew were on the dance floor, slow dancing to some ballad that the DJ played, and the ones that weren't dancing were people she'd burned bridges with long ago.

Edrisa caught her attention again, bouncing from foot to foot like an excited bunny.

Dani sighed, realizing that she was going to have to make small talk with her co-worker. “How do you know them?”

“Who?” Edrisa asked.

Dani fixed her with a pointed look then gestured to the newly-married couple. “Oh, them. I'm not crashing or anything. I grew up next door to Carter. Old family friends, I guess you'd say. How'd you get to be in the wedding party?”

“Angelique is my cousin and since Carter has three brothers and Angelique only has two sisters, she needed an extra person to even out the procession.”

“And she chose you. How lucky.”

“I guess.”

“I've never been in a wedding.”

“Never?”

“Nope.” She didn't say anything more and Dani decided not to pry.

“Don't worry. You're not missing out. You've really got the best of it as a guest. You can wear what you want, act how you want, not be on display and feel like you have to smile for three hours straight when your feet hurt.”

“Your feet hurt?” She glanced down at Dani's shoes.

“God, yes.”

“Why didn't you wear different shoes?”

“These match the dress.”

“And with the hem coming just above your knees like that...”

“Don't remind me.”

“...you really couldn't even sneak a different pair on if you wanted to. When you get home, take those shoes off, put your feet under some cold running water, then elevate your feet.”

“That works?”

“Works for me after a night of line dancing.”

Dani blinked.

“I keep hoping they'll play the Electric Slide. That's the one thing I was really looking forward to.”

“Give it time. That and the Chicken Dance are standard.”

“Oh, I know. I've been to weddings, just haven't been in them.”

The music had stopped. The DJ made an announcement for the bouquet toss.

“And on that note, I'm gonna slip out and get some fresh air for a second.”

“Come on,” Edrisa said, looping her arm through Dani's and pulling her out to the floor where a group of single women were gathering. “It'll be fun. What's the worst that could happen?”

The worst that could happen would be that the bouquet was lobbed right at Dani's head. On instinct, her arms came up and she caught it. Crap.

“Wow. You caught the bouquet.”

“You want it?”

“That's not the way it works, is it?”

“Sadly, no.”

“Besides, the flowers match your dress.”

Dani didn't want to think about the yellow abomination anymore. “Here,” she said, handing Edrisa the flowers. “Take them.”

“Take a selfie with me. You, me, and the bridal bouquet. It'll be fun.”

After Dani started questioning her life choices, but before she could say 'no', the DJ started to play a familiar tune.

All thoughts of selfies forgotten, Edrisa maneuvered Dani into formation to dance the Electric Slide. Dani had only done this a couple of times at the weddings she'd attended. Edrisa was more of a natural.

Edrisa was also in better shoes. Dani didn't expect one of her heels to go flying off her right foot, which caused a bit of a domino effect with the rest of the line as she stumbled a bit, trying to adjust.

Edrisa turned back to see Dani and the rest of the line on the floor. Other groups continued to dance as Edrisa reached down to offer Dani a hand up.

“Do you see where my shoe went?” Dani asked.

“No. Slip out of that one and we'll go look for it.”

“The way my luck is running, it's in the punchbowl.”

“Doubtful,” Edrisa said, glancing around. “Oh, the maid-of-honor just tripped on it. I'll nab it.”

Edrisa skittered away, leaving Dani to watch as her friend retrieved the shoe from under the maid-of-honor. Dani could feel a bit of a blush traveling up her face. She should have gone home right after the ceremony.

“Your slipper, milady,” Edrisa said, returning to her side.

“Thanks.”

“This is kind of nice.”

“Nice?”

“Yeah. At the office, you always seem so together. It's nice to see that you're not perfect.”

Dani laughed. “I'm not perfect.”

Edrisa gave her an answering smile. “I know that now. So how about that selfie?”

“How about not.” On seeing the smile fall from Edrisa's face, Dani sighed and said, “But I could take a picture of you, if you want. Hold the bouquet and you can tell the people in your department that you caught it.”

Edrisa's face went through a complicated mix of emotions as she considered Dani's offer. “Okay, yeah.”

Dani snapped the picture with Edrisa's cell phone, then handed it back to her.

Edrisa glanced at the photograph. “That looks nice. I can't wait to tell everyone on Monday that I ran into you outside of work.”

“About that...”

Edrisa looked up at her. “Don't worry, I won't tell anyone about the dress.”

“Thank you.”

“Or the dancing.”

“Thanks.”

“Or the fact that you have icing on your back.”

“What!?”

Edrisa turned her phone toward Dani, took a picture, and showed it to her. Sure enough, there was a bit of white buttercream clinging to the yellow gown. She remembered the moment it could have happened, when her uncle Al came over to greet Dani's table and gave her a hug.

“Son-of-a-bitch.”

“You're blushing.”

“It happens.”

“I was right. Dusky rose. It suits you.”
