I was presented with the challenge- your OTP's favorite (new) holiday tradition- and this popped into my mind almost immediately. It's a sequel to Mistletoe which I wrote for the Xmas songs challenge at [livejournal.com profile] hardtime100 last year. So, without further ado...

People already compared him to the Grinch, but Martin Querns actually liked Christmas. The inmates were always a little more dialed down during that time, everyone on good behavior so that they were all allowed their visitation time.

The staff, however, was another thing entirely. No, not the whole staff, just McManus and Murphy and that infernal pop bubble-gum song that they insisted on singing during the staff Christmas party every year since they got together.

The first year, it came as a complete surprise. Howell and Lopresti rolled their eyes and made fun of them, but on the whole, it seemed to be a hit with the rest of the staff.

It was not a hit with him. It just caused him to hit the Christmas punch a little too hard which resulted in a massive hangover the next day. After that, he vowed not to let it happen.

The next year, he confiscated Suzanne's piano music for the song, but some smart ass found a file for the karaoke machine and loaded it up. The following year, he tried to pull the plug on the karaoke machine, but Suzanne wound up playing some other Christmas carols for the staff to croon along to and McManus and Murphy grabbed some jingle bells and went about singing their number a capella.

Querns would never go so far as to stop the party entirely- he liked the Christmas punch too much- but listening to Murphy walking down the halls in October lightly singing, “The wise men followed a star, the way I followed my heart...” or McManus filling up his coffee cup in the break room while humming the tune that drove Querns crazy, had him scrambling for alternatives.

He got his wish that November when an invitation to a convention came his way. The convention was in Las Vegas during the same weekend as the Christmas party. He called McManus and Murphy into his office and extended the offer. Murphy jumped at the chance to have a few days away from Oz, but McManus took a little more convincing. They both agreed and Querns was happy to go into the prison discretionary fund and foot the bill for their trip.

Querns went to the party that year a happy man. He mingled with the staff, listened to their jokes, and talent show numbers, and helped himself to plenty of Christmas punch. He was reaching for his fourth glass of the concoction when he heard Sean Murphy's voice. He glanced up and saw Sister Pete standing on the stage with a cell phone pointed toward the microphone.

“Hi, everybody. We're sorry to be missing the Christmas party this year, but didn't want to leave without giving you a little gift.”

As the music started, Querns realized that he'd have to either embrace the tradition or fire the both of them. When McManus chimed in on the With you, he decided that wearing earplugs to the next staff Christmas party might not be a terrible idea.

This is adorable. And I can't decide which idea I like best: the thought of them both knowing that it was driving Querns bananas, and that being half the fun; or them being completely oblivious. :)
