Debate Drinking Game

So for those of us not caught up in counter-programming tonight, let's find a way to make the debate fun -

All Suggestions Are Optional (and we don't encourage driving immediately after if you decide to play)

Take a drink
- Anytime a candidate fails to directly answer a question
- Anytime a candidate says something you disagree with
- Anytime you suspect a candidate isn't telling the whole truth
- Anytime one candidate claims the other doesn't understand
- Anytime one candidate claims the other doesn't have experience
- Anytime one candidate attacks the other
- Anytime a candidate references the current economic crisis
- Anytime the word "maverick" is used (from bitterfig)
- Anytime the phrase "straight talk" is used (from bitterfig)

Vice Presidential add-on
- Anytime Sarah Palin looks like a deer in headlights
- Anytime Sarah Palin references John McCain
- Anytime Sarah Palin is supposed to defend her experience (or lack thereof)
- Anytime Joe Biden makes eye contact with Sarah Palin
- Anytime Sarah Palin refers to herself as a "mom" (from bitterfig)
- Anytime Sarah Palin drops a "g" from a word ending in "ing" (from bitterfig)

Presidential add-on
- Anytime McCain references Vietnam or his POW experience

You can really tell that Biden is holding himself back from ripping her throat out.

I made it till about 9:30 p.m. Chicago time then I had to go to sleep (I'm pathetic).

Another potential cues to take a drink-- when either Palin or McCain says "straight talk."

That's about the time I jumped back in. Palin quoted Ronald Reagan. Biden gave a piece of advice from his father (when you're knocked down, get up - or something along those lines). And that was pretty much that.

"Straight talk". Are they discriminating against me as a lesbian-American? Is this their way of furthering their anti-gay agenda? Hmm.

OMG-this is so funny! If I had actually done it I would be drunk right now! I couldn't unfortunately,cos my stomach is bothering me :(
I'll do it for the Presidential one,though.
It sounds like you saw the part I missed.I came back to my Dad's when the debate was in process. I almost threw up when she said the bit about the middle class families in middle America sitting around the kitchen table-seriously??Was this not an obvious attempt to play up her "hockey mom" status? I was surprised she didn't start saying "we're all just plain folks!" I heard she did use the hockey mom and a reference to "Joe six packs". I don't know,but if I were a "Joe six pack" (I'm reading this as a working or middle income guy) I would be insulted by the stereotype,rather than endeared by it.
She referenced John McCain every single question that I heard her answer,but then again so did Joe Biden with Obama.
I disagree with everything Sarah Palin said as far as her politics go. She talks a good game about what families and America needs,but when it comes to how to get those things we differ. And the defense of the war is,well,indefensible at this point. She also got the General's name wrong. She referenced a Civil War General instead of the present one. I'm sure SNL will have fun with that.
I didn't hear either one of them attack each other,which I was glad about. But she didn't answer alot of questions,and kept trying to focus on John McCain and what he would do and has done and how she'd follow.
I liked Joe Biden's response to her "mom raising a family" thing with his experience raising his child on his own after his wife and daughter died. And he made a point of saying that he knew what it was like to worry about that child and medical expenses,etc. That was after Sarah Palin's spiel about how she and her husband had to worry about paying out of pocket medical expenses for their kids.
One thing I have to say: There was a point that Joe had tears in his voice,and he faltered a little. If she had done that she'd have been blasted as an emotional woman. He wasn't blasted as an emotional man. Not that I think he should have been,of course. I just know there'd be a difference. I know years ago Ed Muskie was blasted when he cried over some negative personal things said about his wife, but that was a long time ago,and he was running for President. Today it's ok for a man to show a little emotion if it's about family,but not a woman.
Of course if she had his situation and DIDN'T get emotional about her child and husband who'd died,and one who almost didn't make it-they'd call her a bitch!
As a woman I'm glad she held her own,but I don't think she distinguished herself as a candidate.
Joe Biden was somewhat more impressive. He struck me as being somewhat more prepared and with a more detailed record. I also liked what I saw of him.

My brother-in-law drank during the Presidential debate just when they didn't answer a question. He was pretty toasted by the end of it.

What I saw was actually pretty interesting, but I kept wanting Biden to get in there and jump on it. And that's really the other side of the gender issue. Like you said, it's okay for men to show emotion - in fact, it's probably a good thing. But if Sarah Palin had been a man, it would have been a "no-holds-barred" cage match between the two of them with Biden repeatedly knocking Palin down. But since she's female, any attack would be seen as such, an attack on the poor innocent girl. Hilary versus Palin, that would have been a fun debate.

They did invoke the names of their running mates quite a bit. And Palin's "you betcha" comment early on made me want to scream. Not to mention the phrase "predator lenders" (I thought I had a problem with the closed captioning cutting off the "y" in "predatory", but no). It was just too folksy.

I really wonder how debate teachers are going to explain this sort of thing to their students.

And watching it, boy, did I want to... I had to click away every five minutes or so, 'cause, Palin? Really? Ugh. Also was watching Supernatural. Heh. *g*

Yes. It's the only way to get through it.

I watched the first 20 minutes of it with close-captioning because I had the Hawks-Stars game playing on my computer, stopped for a bit, and then I caught the closing statements (during intermission). I wanted to smack Palin.

I think Joe Biden did too, but he's a gentleman.
