Fandom(s): BtVS (post S3) and Oz (any season, any time)
Character(s): Xander and Cyril (and anyone else you want)
Prompt: AR Xander's first day on the job in Em City.
A/N: I set it in OZ Season 3 with cameos by Leo, Murphy, and Ryan (in that order)
Dear Willow,
Remember those career tests we took junior year and how mine said that I was suited for work as a prison guard? Well, apparently, it’s true because you’re hearing from the newest Correctional Officer at the Oswald State Correctional Facility. They call it Oz, for short. I wonder if that’s going to affect things come the full moon.
“This is Sean Murphy. He’ll be showing you around your unit.”
“Thanks, Warden.” Xander shook Leo’s hand and followed Murphy out.
Emerald City. That’s where I’m stationed. It’s sort of an experimental unit Lots of glass. Everybody watching everybody. And in the middle of it all – me.
“Murphy, have you seen Cyril?”
“Not lately. Did you check the gym?”
“He knows better than to go without me.”
“I’m sure he’ll turn up, O’Reily.”
“Can I help?”
“Who the fuck are you?”
Xander stuck a hand out in greeting. “Xa-“
“This is Officer Harris.” Murphy cut him off. Xander had momentarily forgotten that being on a first name basis with the prisoners would be akin to inviting a vampire into his apartment.
After getting Cyril’s description from Ryan (“looks like me, but with longer hair”), Xander set off in search of the prisoner. Towards the end of his second circuit of EmCity, he found what he was looking for underneath a table in the library.
My first day in Oz and I find what I’m looking for in the library. I will never get away from them. If Cyril (the prisoner I was looking for) was holding a copy of the Compendium of Demonology, then I would go back to my apartment and start filling out that application for the Cleveland Board of Corrections.
As it was, the prisoner was quiet, curled up in a ball. Xander reached out a hand to him, praying that the young man wouldn’t bite. “Are you going to come out?” he asked.
“Ryan’s mad at me.”
Xander sat down on the floor.
“Ryan. Is that your brother?”
Cyril nodded.
“He’s worried about you. He’s been looking all over for you.”
“He wants me to box. That nice man told me I didn’t have to box if I don’t want to.”
“Well, that’s something you and your brother should talk about later.”
“I did talk about it. That’s why he’s mad at me,” Cyril whined.
“Can you just come out from under the table?”
“Okay.” Cyril slid out from his hiding place. “Who are you?”
“Xa- Officer Harris.”
“I’m not supposed to talk to strangers.”
“Right. Good. But can a stranger do this?” Xander asked, before launching into a modified version of the Snoopy dance. He really hoped to God that nobody was looking into the room at that particular moment.
Cyril started to laugh. “Can you teach me how to do that? I think I’d like it better than boxing.”
“Well, let’s just let this be our little secret.”
Cyril nodded. “I have a secret too.”
“Yeah?”
Cyril bent close and whispered in Xander’s ear. Xander’s eyes widened slightly and he took a step away. “I’ll see what I can do,” said Xander.
I think all the experience of Sunnydale is really going to come in handy here. Besides feeling like everyone is a demon-in-disguise, it seems that I’m going to have to help avert a minor apocalypse every day. Starting with an attempt to get Cyril O’Reily away from his brother’s influence.
Give Buffy an extra-tight hug from me.
Love,
Xander

What a wonderful treat for the first snow-day of the year.
::hugs Xander, hugs Cyril::
And of course Xander is going to write to Willow and tell her all about it. Beautiful!
This is going straight to memories. I love it. I really, really love it. Thank you!

Re: Oh! So Wonderful!
Date: 2008-11-07 05:15 pm (UTC)I'm glad you had fun writing the fic. I'd have felt so awful if it had been a dreaded prompt. And, it might not have been so wonderful if it had been ... you know?
Re: Oh! So Wonderful!
Date: 2008-11-07 05:57 pm (UTC)The fic was fun and it's nice to have prompts that challenge me to get out of my canon-wedded comfort zone.

What secret did Cyril tell Xander that made him feel like he was going to have to help avert a minor acolapyse.

Date: 2008-11-06 06:09 pm (UTC)Oh, the secret, I don't know. It's whatever you suppose it to be. And everything in Oz verges on a minor apocalypse for those people - it's all in how you look at it.
