Ryan blinked and looked around his surroundings. White ceiling, white walls, smell of antiseptic in the air. Yep, he was in the hospital. Felt pretty good actually for a guy who’d been shot.
Orange daisies on the table by the bed. Pretty. How’d they get there?
Heavy footsteps. Back and forth. Back and forth. Focus.
Cyril. Looking mad enough to kill.
“Hey,” Ryan whispered, effectively stopping Cyril mid-stomp.
Cyril’s face softened a bit as he came over to sit beside Ryan. “You’re up. Good.”
“I got shot, Cyr.”
“Yeah.”
“Maybe get a tattoo to celebrate the occasion. Knife between the shoulderblades or something.”
“You were shot, not stabbed.”
“It’s meta-“ Ryan concentrated hard. The drugs they had him on made him a little loopy. “Metaphorical. How’s Patrick?”
“Patrick’s gone.”
“Motherfucking son-of-a-bitch.”
“I’m taking care of it.”
“No. No. No. I’m the one got shot. I should be…”
“We move now. We move fast. In your condition, you’re not going anywhere.”
“I don’t want to have to bury you next to Patrick.”
“Gonna be a long time before that happens. How do you want me to handle Shannon?”
“She’s not here?”
“Haven’t told her yet.”
Ryan’s eyes fell on the floral arrangement again. It wasn’t Cyril’s style. A moment tickled the edges of his memory.
“It won’t be you standing over my grave. It’ll be me over yours.”
“I like orange daisies. Remember that.”
A faint smile touched Dino’s lips. “Okay.”
Ryan shook his head, as if trying to clear it in order to get back to the subject at hand. “Tell Shannon what’s what. Get her out of the house. Take her to Aunt Brenda’s for a while if she wants to stay. Just make sure she’s safe.”
“She’s not going to like it.”
“There’s a lot of things that Shannon doesn’t like. She’s gonna have to live with it. She can’t come here either. It’s not safe.”
“Agreed.”
“I still think you should wait before hitting Schibetta’s crew. They’ll be expecting retaliation. Give it a week or two. Let them relax their guard, and…”
“Sit back and watch them pick off our crew one at a time. Not gonna happen.” Cyril stood up and moved toward the door.
“Be safe, little brother.”
“Always am,” said Cyril with a grin before he left.
Ryan stared at the orange daisies for what seemed like hours before he was distracted by a knock at the door. It wasn’t a nurse or doctor that entered. It was a cop.
“You said you had some information about the shooting?”
“I know the motherfucker that did it. Dino Ortolani.”
