At last my faith in the voters is restored. Some very random observations -

Out here in LA the pre-game started at 3pm with the Road to the Oscars show. With Richard Roeper and some other guy. It was pretty annoying as was the Oscar-sponsored pre-show. I can't figure out why that fashion guy called Jennifer Hudson "the people's princess". Yeah, I know it's a reference to "The Queen". But it didn't make a heck of a lot of sense to me.

Ellen was great. Nice to see three out lesbians in attendance - Ellen, Melissa and Tammy Lynn Michaels (Yay for thanking the wife, Melissa). I am willing to claim both Queen Latifah and Jodie Foster for the tribe - and both of them looked incredible.

Did Nicole Kidman screw up by saying "And the Winner Is..."? It was refreshing. Much better than all that "And the Oscar goes to..." nonsense that followed.

Loved the guy that won for "West Bank Story". Definitely one of the best speeches of the night.

Slashy fun during the supporting actor race with a nice Dignam/Costigan clip. I love Mark Wahlberg, but I'm quite happy that Arkin won.

Interesting cutaway to Queen Latifah after Melissa got done singing. I'm just observant that way.

Costume design nominees should not be wearing ugly clothes.

I love the way they did the screenplay nominees. It was brilliant. Of course, I'm now thinking "Children of Men" is something I have to see.

Did Tom Hanks not want to give out the Adapted Screenplay award? He was borderline fake overexuberant on leaving the stage. Very strange behavior.

Clive Owen and Cate Blanchett shouldn't be together on stage. Human eyes aren't equiped for that kind of beauty.

Surprise of the night - "The Lives of Others" GERMANY! Woo hoo!

Missed most of Celine's number but caught her making a face toward the end there that made me miss Renee Zellwegger. Clint needed to rustle her off the stage.

I had no idea how much Ennio Morricone has done. He works on everything.

Got a little nervous when "Babel" picked up the Original Score award.

Someone must have heard that editing was a make or break category which may have been why it was so late in the broadcast.

The little tribute things were interesting - naturally I liked the writers one and also the foreign films one, the celebrating America one, which I guess they needed to have in this "international" year was a bit odd (and why didn't they reference "Miami Vice" as a Michael Mann film)

Was anyone else afraid Beyonce was going to fall out of her dress?

Forest Whitaker gave what was undeniably the best speech of the night.

Finally. Marty. He deserved this a while ago, but I'm glad the Academy finally made good.

Was Diane Keaton on something? She was a bit over the top.

Nice that the best film of the year won. It doesn't always happen that way.

Life goes back to normal tomorrow more or less. Maybe I'll write a little slash to celebrate.
