The Start of the O'Reily Story

Here is the opening of the Ryan O'Reily story that I've been teasing you about. I hope you enjoy it - feedback/suggestions for what you want to see are appreciated (although I already have an ending in mind, getting there is what's fun).
It's a prologue so the warning is only for language.
DOUBLE NEGATIVES
Prologue
Ryan O’Reily looked up from the card game to watch Miguel Alvarez stroll through the quad. He tried to catch Alvarez’ eye, see if the play was in motion.
“O’Reily,” said Hill, a bit exasperated.
“What’s he looking at?” asked Busmalis, turning to follow O’Reily’s line of vision.
“Alvarez,” replied Keller, not glancing up from his cards. “Again.”
Despite his distraction, Ryan wasn’t going to let Keller’s insinuation go unanswered. Almost automatically, he responded, “I ain’t no fag.”
“Ain’t no,” Keller emphasized Ryan’s own words, never a good sign. O’Reily looked to Busmalis to support.
“That’s a double negative,” supplied Busmalis. Hill nodded and smiled.
Ryan realized that he no longer had an ally at that table.
“Which means-” began Hill.
“-That he takes it up the ass,” concluded Keller.
Busmalis reasoned, “Now, fellas, let’s be fair.” O’Reily was no longer sure if the old man was back on his side, or just setting him up for another attack.
“You’re right,” said Hill. “He could just suck cock.”
Keller fired another volley his way. “Or he wants to. Is that it, O’Reily? Do you want to...?”
Across the quad, Alvarez gave O’Reily the signal. Ryan saw it as lousy fucking timing, but time to go all the same. He threw his cards down and walked away from the table with a “Fuck you all” to the group.
Double negatives. How many times had Sister Agnes told him in eighth grade that his bad grammar would get him into trouble? Probably as many times as he had to write “Ain’t isn’t a word” on the chalkboard.
“I’m not a fag,” O’Reily muttered softly, passing Adebisi on his way toward the stairs.
“I’m not a fag,” he repeated, trying to get the words in his head, as he took the steps two at a time, heading up to the second tier.
“Hey, Murphy,” he acknowledged, breezing past the man standing at the guard post. O’Reily didn’t stop long enough for the C.O. to return the greeting.
“I’m not a fag,” he continued as he walked through the top level.
“Glad to hear it,” said McManus, coming out of his office.
Ryan shook his head and sighed. Double negatives. Jesus. It’s not like nobody didn’t know what he meant. He didn’t have to talk like some goddamned Ivy League grad. This was Oz for Crissakes. Hell, half of the fucks out there didn’t get past eighth grade. They had to know what he meant.
Didn’t they?
Jesus. He didn’t have time for this shit to cloud his mind. He had to stay sharp. Setting up Raul Hernandez was something that needed to be done carefully.
And it was. Everything went according to plan. By lockdown, Hernandez, Ricardo, and Guerra were sitting pretty in a new home far away from EmCity. Alvarez was in his debt. All in all, Ryan thought it’d been a pretty good day.
Still though, lying in his cell, long after lights out, Ryan couldn’t sleep. His thoughts drifted back to the conversation at the card table. Keller’s words haunted him the most.
“Or he wants to. Is that it, O’Reily? Do you want to...?”
Ryan O’Reily had never touched another guy’s dick in his life. But... thinking about it? Well, that was another thing entirely.

So, yay for story!

Date: 2006-11-06 02:31 am (UTC)And the funny thing for me is that I had NO O'Reily love the first time I watched Oz. Oh, don't get me wrong, I loved watching him pull his Lord of the Dance routines. I loved the character. But I didn't find him all that sexy. And I sure as hell didn't slash him with anyone. Now ... whole different ball game, baby. But I still love Keller, with all my sociopath loving little heart.
Right now I've got order questions - can't figure out if it should go in chronological order, in order of intensity (some sort of ebb & flow, or a change with a shifting in Ryan's mind), or should it just go with the randomness of O'Reily. Or maybe I should just write out the ones that I'm doing and just let the fates dictate.
Hmmm, usually I'm a big one for order. I'm a canon whore in my fanfic, and, although I love good AUs, I require the characters to be IN character for them. And don't even get me started on my poetry. I have been known to 'experiment' with form quite regularly. Okay, I'm anal, I admit it.
For this one though, I'm leaning toward the randomness that is O'Reily. Maybe because the perceived randomness isn't always as random as it seems? I can totally see Ryan muddling his way through his sexual awakening like he's playing a con. Because that's how we love him.

Hee! Yep. That's why I used it. I are so coy.

Date: 2006-11-06 06:44 am (UTC)My feeling was exactly the opposite. I hated O'Reily in Season One & the pre-cancer part of Season Two, but then he started to get interesting rather than annoying. I just remembered having watched Season One for the first time on DVD & then catching a later episode on cable and thinking, "why the hell hasn't anybody shanked this asshole yet?" And now I love him. I like Keller. He's a lot of fun. Maybe he was the replacement O'Reily in a way because Ryan's path toward redemption starts right after the cancer (there are a few bumps along the way, but still that's when it seems to start), but Keller schemes from day one all the way to the bitter end. Therefore, if Keller is the equivalent of Season One Ryan, my feelings for him would be the equivalent of my feelings for Season One Ryan. Actually though, I love all the Oz characters, each in their own way.
