Days passed without incident. Dino stuck close to home. The pull from the job was big enough that he could afford to spend a few days with Ginny and the kids. The bruises had faded, the memories hadn’t. He needed to avoid questions, so he’d stood by his decision not to visit Nino this week.

It was something that he regretted the moment the ringing phone interrupted a game of Chutes and Ladders with Sofia. He wanted to tell Ginny to ignore it, but she’d already lifted the receiver. He could hear her voice, coming closer as she brought the phone in from the kitchen.

“Hi Nino... I’m fine... Yeah, he’s here.” The pause was minimal, as she seized on the only story that would make sense. “He’s a little under the weather, you know. Caught a cold from one of the kids.”

Dino looked up from his spot at the table and smiled. God, he loved her in that moment. Fast on her feet, Ginny had a sense of the business and what she could and couldn’t get away with. Nino had always said that if it was a different world, Ginny would be his second-in-command and Dino would be home raising the kids. One of Nino’s favorite sayings was “The greatest asset of a man in this business is a strong woman behind him.” But then the old man would grin and add, “Provided she can cook, of course.”

Ginny handed Dino the phone and true to form, Nino said, “That’s a hell of a woman you got there.”

“Yes. She is.”

The smile fell from Dino's face the moment that Nino switched tactics.

“You wanna tell me why you haven’t checked in in five days? And why Peter didn’t know anything about your illness when he came to tell me that you and Bobby fucked up the job? Couldn’t you bother to take responsibility for what happened?”

It took a moment for Nino’s words to sink in. Dino stood up so quickly that he bumped the table, causing the pieces to jump about. As Sofia gleefully took advantage of the opportunity to move up the ladder that her piece landed on, Dino choked back the few choice words he had for the situation. This resulted in a coughing fit that had Ginny hustling over to whack him on the back.

“Jesus, kid,” Nino’s voice came through the phone. “You really do sound like crap. Get some rest. You and Peter are set to see our friends down south next week. He’ll give you the details.” With that Nino hung up the phone.

“Fuck!” yelled Dino.

“Dino, the kids.” Ginny warned.

Dino handed the phone to Ginny and then sat back down at the table next to Sofia. He gently ruffled his little girl’s hair. “Sorry, sweetie.” Sofia looked at him with some curiosity. “You see sometimes Daddy feels it’s necessary to say certain words, but only when some rat ass-fuck bastard pushes him into it. You see that, right?”

Sofia nodded, then grabbed his hand. “Spin, daddy.” Dino spun the plastic arrow for the game, landing on the number 3. The exact number of spaces that would send him to the top of a very long slide. Sofia giggled. “Oh-oh. You fucked up.”

“Sofia!” cried Ginny, shocked.

Dino just laughed. All the tension of the moment seemed to dissolve as he watched Sofia move his game piece back toward the start of the game board. He looked up at Ginny and shrugged. “I don’t know where she gets it.”

Ginny kissed him on the top of his head, then sat down on his lap. “Image of her father through and through.”

“Let’s hope not,” Dino said, but beamed with pride at his daughter.

“So did the old man just want to ride you about not coming to visit? You see him more than his own son.”

“Apparently this wasn’t the week to take off.”

Understanding dawned in Ginny’s eyes. “That little shit.”

“Mommy, you said a bad word,” chimed in Sofia.

“Got a trip coming up. Me and Petey. All the way to Florida.”

Ginny noticed that Dino clenched his hands into fists at the mention of Nino’s son. Her mind was set on alert as Dino mumbled under his breath. “Who knows what will happen on the road?”

Ginny looked him in the eyes. “Dino, don’t do anything stupid. Please. It’ll all work out.” She leaned against his shoulder, running her fingers through his hair as she whispered. “It’s just the way of the world. Karma’s going to fuck the little prince in the ass sooner or later.” Dino sighed and she amended. “Twice. No one fucks with my man and escapes fate.”

Dino wrapped his arms around Ginny and kissed her passionately. Maybe by the time he’d reached Florida, he’d figure out a way to accelerate fate’s hand in the younger Schibetta’s life.
