“911 Emergency. Please state the nature of your call.”

“Oh fuck. Oh Jesus. Oh fuck.”

“Sir?” The female voice on the other end of the telephone was eerily calm. “Are you hurt?”

Why the hell was she asking about him? “There’s been a shooting. Near Hennessy and Grant.”

“Sir? Were you shot?”

“I... I’m not sure. Might have gotten clipped. I don’t know. Oh fuck. You gotta... you gotta help him. I tried. They’d’ve killed him if I hadn’t...”

“An ambulance was dispatched to that scene about five min-.” Dino hung up the phone and pulled over to the curb.

Oh God, please let him be all right. Please. I didn’t want to.

BAM! The sound of the gunshot reverberated in his head. He saw it all again.

The guy standing next to Ryan falling.

Ryan drawing his gun and firing at him.

The sharp pain of the bullet grazing flesh.

And then...

Oh God, how did everything get so fucked up?

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Last Tuesday...

“Peter has been telling me that you continue to have problems with the O’Reily brothers,” Nino began.

Fucking Peter. Always getting in the way.

“Nah, that shit with Bobby was...”

Nino raised an eyebrow, never a good sign. “You’re defending these Mick cocksuckers?”

“I’m just saying it wasn’t O’Reily. Beating somebody with a tire iron is not his M.O.”

“Did I ask you to analyze the situation?”

“No, Nino.”

“Why is it that I get reports from Peter that these Irish are taking up more territory and you say nothing about it? It makes me think that I’m placing my confidence in the wrong man. You’re closer to it. You see what’s going on.”

“I’ve got it under control.”

“You’ve got O’Reily up your ass. Now, you’re going to take care of it. You’re going to send a message. And if you don’t, somebody else will. And that somebody’s gonna be sitting here across from me next Tuesday. Capice?”

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

“Ginny. It’s time for you to take the kids and visit your mother.”

“Come with me.”

Dino touched her face gently. “I can’t, baby. I can’t run. If I start now, we’ll be running forever. It’ll just be a week or two. I promise.”

Ginny grabbed hold of him and started to sob into his chest. Dino rubbed her back gently.

“What happened to Jake isn’t going to happen to me. I’ll be careful. I’ll get through this. But I need to know that you and the kids are safe, okay?”

Ginny nodded against his chest. She wiped her eyes. “I love you,” she whispered.

“I love you, too.”

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Dino sat in his car outside the apartment complex that Nino owned. He figured it was as good a place to wait it out as any. There weren’t going to be any more nights like that one three weeks ago. Most guys tend to hold a grudge after their brother gets shot. And Dino couldn’t - wouldn’t - let anything like that happen anymore.

The cell vibrated its way across the dashboard. “Yeah?”

Peter Schibetta’s voice came through the phone. “O’Reily is at Callahan’s Restaurant on Grant. His car is parked on Hennessy. He’ll head in that direction.”

Obviously. “Is he alone?”

“He’s got one of his associates with him. Not his brother, unfortunately. Nothing you can’t handle. But just in case, Rico’s staying in the area as backup.”

“I don’t need-“

“Don’t worry, Dino. He’ll let you take the first shot.” Peter hung up the phone.

No backing out now.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Dino lit the cigarette and inhaled. The area was pretty much deserted, but he knew that Rico wasn’t far away. He looked up to see two men approaching from the street ahead.

As he pulled his gun, Peter’s words on the phone came back to him. “O’Reily is at Callahan’s Restaurant.”

O’Reily.

Not Cyril O’Reily. The intended target. The person who Dino had planned to shoot.

Ryan O’Reily.

Fuck.

All this flashed through his mind in the instant it took him to reposition his gun and hit Ryan’s associate.

Ryan shot back, the bullet grazing Dino as it whizzed past.

I don’t want to kill him. But if he doesn’t go down, Rico’s going to finish him – and me – off.

Dino squeezed the trigger. Ryan fell.

Now I just have to make sure he doesn’t get back up for a few minutes.

Dino moved over to Ryan’s body and kicked hard enough to hear O’Reily’s ribs crack.

Dino walked quickly back to his car and drove away.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

“An ambulance was dispatched to that scene about five min-.” Dino hung up the phone and pulled over to the curb.

As he sat remembering the night’s events, two questions went through his mind. Did Ryan survive? And, why was Petey tracking Ryan and not Cyril?
