Quick Noms-Based Post

So I'm somewhat pleased the way the nominations came out. I was watching them at 5:38 this morning while on the phone with my brother. (It's tradition). I was a little surprised that "Dreamgirls" was not nominated for Best Picture - surprised because all the buzz said it should be, but in actuality, it wasn't all that (so I'm glad it wasn't just me who thought it). Of the Best Picture nominees that I haven't seen, only "The Queen" stands a slim chance of me getting into it - I'll watch "Little Miss Sunshine" on DVD tonight. I really wish Leo would have gotten nominated for "The Departed" though. I'm sure "Blood Diamond" was good and all, but it's just not the same. And what's the deal with "Little Children" - on some levels, I guess I'm sort of glad, but I have to sit there another year with my ex's voice in my head sighing "Kate", it's annoying. And I haven't seen "Borat" but I really don't like that it's nominated in a screenplay category. I was reading Fade In yesterday and it seems like Sasha Baron Cohen is being considered for EVERYTHING now. Insane. And where are all the new actresses - with the exception of Penelope Cruz, this just seems like it's a rehash of every other year. Let's get some new blood into the mix. Last thought before heading out, it would be somewhat amazing and totally like the Academy if Peter O'Toole scored the year's biggest upset (over Forest Whittaker in the Best Actor category).

I don't really get why Kate Winslet gets a nomination for Little Children and Patrick Wilson doesn't...

You're enticing me to see it, aren't you? So I can judge his performance in comparison to the other actors. But without even seeing the film, I could mention that the Academy always seems to have a hard time choosing women's performances - there is always the lock (in this year's case, Helen Mirren) and then the surprise (Penelope Cruz) but those other three (Densch, Streep, & La Winslet) just seemed to be chosen from the hat that they put all of the past nominees in. It's not discounting their performances and maybe the system is just set up that way - "seems like a good role something that Kate, Judy, Meryl could really sink their teeth into." Of course, I would cast Julianne Moore and Diane Lane in everything I wasn't casting Glenn Close, Holly Hunter and Anna Paquin in, so maybe I'm not the best judge of that sort of thing. I really would have liked to have seen the cast of "The Departed" get nominated for as much as possible acting-wise. So if I do see "Little Children" (and can keep my brain from retching every time La Winslet shows up), I'll be comparing Patrick Wilson's performance to semi-snubbed Leo in "The Departed" or Aaron Eckhart from "Thank You for Smoking".

Admittedly, the Academy Award jury and me almost never had the same ideas about... well, anything, really, so this doesn't surprise me much.

Little Children is pretty awesome. I'm hopelessly biased, of course, because I adore Patrick Wilson and any movie that has him almost naked is basically a winner in my book. But even from a more objective point of view, it's very intriguing.
