If you're curious as to what I think will win and my opinions on some of the nominees (as well as Celine Dion), click

Visual Effects - Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man's Chest

Sound Mixing - Flags of our Fathers (I originally thought Dreamgirls, but on reflection, sound mixing is a bitch and working with layers of things like in a war movie is much tougher than an elaborate music video). Unless the Academy wants to throw Dreamgirls a technical bone, that is.

Sound Editing - Flags of our Fathers (unless they split with themselves for Letters from Iwo Jima, then something else might sneak in)

The next few categories are a toss up. The criteria for being chosen is as follows - what I've heard of, what title seems the most intriguing, or the first or last title on the list (which is why all my scripts are titled "Aardvark")

Live Action Short - West Bank Story (heard of this one)

Animated Short - The Little Matchgirl (originally I hadn't chosen this, I picked "No Time for Nuts" on the basis of its intriguing title, but since I learned that it was a Disney hand-drawn cartoon, I went with it)

Documentary Short - Two Hands (couldn't tell you why, this was a pretty tough category, I'd give it to anybody but "Recycled Life")

Documentary Feature - An Inconvenient Truth (it made money, nuff said)

Original Song - "Our Town" from Cars - Dreamgirls will split. This has Randy Newman attached and they've been pimping it on the radio since noms came out.

Original Score - "Notes on a Scandal" - okay, "The Queen" was originally going to get my pick, but the name Philip Glass trumps everything in my book (so it'll probably still go to "The Queen")

Makeup - "Pan's Labyrinth"

Costume Design - "Curse of the Golden Flower" - I've seen this film. The costumes are unbelievable and I don't know why it's not in the next category...

Art Direction - "Dreamgirls" - There's the technical bone I'm throwing it

Editing - "United 93"

Cinematography - "Pan's Labyrinth"

Foreign Language Film - Pan's Labyrinth

Animated Feature - Cars - like I said, they've pimped this like crazy (My niece didn't like this film, it bored her. She says it is a "boy's movie")

Okay the next two are winning these just because one of them can't win Best Picture

Original Screenplay - "Little Miss Sunshine" by Michael Arndt

Adapted Screenplay - "The Departed" by William Monahan (seriously, was anyone surprised that I picked this)

Supporting Actress - Jennifer Hudson, "Dreamgirls" (She owns that movie, and the only actress that's even close in this category is Abigail Breslin)

Supporting Actor - Alan Arkin, "Little Miss Sunshine" (quasi-surprise of the evening, but the last scene between him and Abby in LMS really makes the movie)

Best Actress - Helen Mirren "The Queen"

Best Actor - Forest Whitaker "The Last King of Scotland" (O'Toole for "Venus" could pull off the upset if the Academy decides to reward two previously overlooked oft-nominated people, which leads me to...)

Best Director - Martin Scorsese "Goodfellas", er "The Departed" - Okay, I'll admit, Clint's a bit of a worry for me, as is Paul Greengrass who has pimped himself to the extreme, but seriously, the man deserves it. And I really don't want to be in a state of shock by the time they call Best Picture

Best Picture - "The Departed" - This would be the Academy's way of making things right with me for last year's debacle with "Crap", I mean "Crash". "Little Miss Sunshine" wouldn't kill me, but, if it's "Babel", there is no justice. They say genre pictures don't win, but "The Silence of the Lambs", "Dances with Wolves", "The Unforgiven", even silly "Titanic" all were genre pictures.

These are just my opinions, really, the only thing I know for certain is that I'll be heading out of the room when Celine Dion performs (and she's ruining "Once Upon a Time in America", one of my favorite genre films by adding words to a tune that could do without the addition of her voice).
