So I picked up a 3x3 square in the [livejournal.com profile] 1_million_words Bingo challenge. The theme was Games We Play. I put together 9 drabbles for it - all OZ based.

GUESS WHO

Joey approached Nino and sat down. “I heard it was one of the black guys that whacked Ortolani.”

“Which one?”

“It was night. My guy wasn’t sure.”

“Was the guy big or small?”

“I don’t know.”

“Was he bald? Did he have dreadlocks? Or his hair under one of those skull caps the Muslims wear?”

“What beef do the Muslims have with us?”

“I’m trying to help us narrow our search.”

“I don’t think it was a Muslim.”

“One thing though. If it turns out to be the guy in the wheelchair, I’m gonna break four of the witness’s fingers.”

MONOPOLY

“You can’t use all of the machines,” Schillinger said.

“I am not.” replied Said. “My brothers are also doing their laundry today.”

“You guys have been tying things up for the last four hours and from the looks of it, you’ll be here til lights out. Don’t Muslims have a thing about sharing?”

“You can use the laundry when we are through. Preparation is key. If you had been better prepared, rather than parading around your newest conquest, perhaps you would have gotten here first.” He looked down at the dress in Schillinger’s hand. “You may want to pre-treat that.”

CHECKERS

They say the spark that caused the riot was two dinks playing a game of checkers. Who the two dinks were was unimportant in the grand scheme of things. It could have been anyone with a short fuse and anger at the system. There were some guys that could be ruled out, of course. If it was Hill against Rebadow, Em City might still be standing, might not be this burned out shell of a unit that Tim was currently standing in the middle of. They would rebuild, of course, but the checkers board may not find its way back.

RED LIGHT/GREEN LIGHT

McManus walked through what used to be Emerald City. Glass was broken out of nearly every cell. There was smoke damage and water damage from the fires that were set. It would take months, maybe even a year to restore her to her former glory. The Governor, after far too many delays, had finally given the green light to rebuilding his unit this morning. McManus looked around, this time seeing the area differently. He could see what she could become the new, improved vision of how prison should be. Tim McManus would try again, and this time he would succeed.

SOLITARE

It was never really quiet in solitary. You were supposedly cut off from the rest of the world, but you could hear everything that was going on outside of your walls, whether it was Adebisi losing it from the detox. Or it was O’Reily and Alvarez trading stories of their sexual pasts across the way. Or one of the guards with their patent leather shoes clip-clopping down the hall, there was always some type of noise. You knelt, trying to pray amidst the distractions that were worse in the silence than in the liveliness of the center of Em City.

LIFE

Life plus forty years. It was a joke. Why the extra time? It wasn’t as though life was going to be any less than the remainder of his days. Was he going to have to serve more time in Heaven or Hell or wherever the fuck he was going once all this was said and done? It didn’t make any sense. Maybe it did to the jury. Maybe it did to Gloria. That was something. If it made a difference to her, it was all worth it. Would she stay here to spend it with him? He could only hope.

OLD MAID

She didn’t let the fact that she wasn’t married bother her. That was for other people to contemplate. Claire had a decent job, and made better money than the burger flippers in her family. She didn’t make a big deal out of it. But they saw this marriage thing like some great milestone she had to pass, like she wasn’t a real woman if she didn’t have the husband and the two point five kids. She wasn’t going to be an old maid. Oh, she would get old, but the maid aspect had fallen by the wayside in high school.

CLUE

“We could go out.”

“Huh?”

“You know, double-date.”

“Us?”

“Well, me with a girl, and you with a girl. I was thinking of asking out that woman who’s handling the dog program. Maybe she has a friend. Do you want me to ask?”

“What?”

“If she has a friend.”

“I’m sure she probably does.”

“For you to go out with. Catch up, Sean.”

“You don’t even know if this woman wants to date you.”

“I think I have a pretty good idea when someone wants to date me.”

“No, buddy, you don’t have a clue.”

“So… is that a ‘no’?”

HOPSCOTCH

“McManus, you’ve got to be kidding,” said Lopresti.

“Why? This is an ancient practice that some cultures use to meditate. You bring a guy in here with a problem and he makes his way through the maze while he thinks about his problem. Hopefully, by the time he’s through, he’ll have it solved.”

“You really are something.”

“Thank you.”

“That wasn’t a compliment. Do you think tomorrow you could bring in some chalk? I’d really like to put a hopscotch game down the middle of death row. What do you think?”

“I think you should get the fuck outta here.”

Wow, I really like the idea of this. It's very creative, and you did a wonderful job interpreting all the games. (Boy, I'd forgotten all about red light/green light!) All the drabbles was great, and Said's zinger about the dress made me LOL. But I think my favorite was CLUE, for Obvious Reasons. ;D

Yeah, I've actually been lurking there a little bit after you mentioned it earlier, and I really like the atmosphere there. One of the things I really want to do this year is write a long fic (although I said this last year, too), but I'm a little intimidated by the idea of officially signing up for a Big Bang Challenge. I've been thinking that community might be a good for giving me the push I need without all the pressure.
