For the prompt: I don't think right now is the time for a...
"Raiders of the Lost Ark" is the best movie ever made and I've always wanted to do a little something with Indiana Jones & Rene Belloq. So this seemed as good a time as any to write them.
A BIT OF A BREAK
“I don’t think right now is the time for a break,” Indiana said. They were so close to finding the Crown of Agnieska that Indy wanted to continue digging. His muscles were starting to protest and any stoppage might set them back half a day at least.
“The Crown has been here for a thousand years. It can spend another day in its resting place,” Belloq reasoned. “Come, Indiana.” Belloq extended a hand.
“René, we-“
“We were fortunate enough to connect again.”
“Is that what you call it?”
“Yes. I’ve never met anyone like you. There are too many rogues in our business.”
“And you’re one of them.”
“Perhaps, but that’s what attracts you to me.”
Indiana didn’t say anything and Belloq smiled. “Come, Indiana.”
Indiana did not take Belloq’s hand but he did walk with him to the camp. Wordlessly, they entered Belloq’s tent.
Belloq poured him some water. “Here. Drink this. Sit down.” Belloq gestured toward a cot.
“Where will you…?”
“I’ll be fine.”
“How is it that you haven’t even broken a sweat?” Indiana untied his shirt from his waist, wiped his forehead with it, and then pulled it over his shoulders, leaving it open rather than buttoning it.
“Because I have learned how to delegate. And I prefer that the hole being dug is not a grave for myself.”
“You’re lucky you’re so pretty,” Indiana muttered. He heard a sharp intake of breath from Belloq and went to cover quickly. “This heat is really getting to me.”
“Is that all that’s getting to you, Doctor Jones?”
“Thank you for the water. I probably should-“ Indiana rose to his feet.
“Stay.”
It was one word, one simple word, that froze Indy in his tracks.
“René.”
“There has always been something between us. Don’t deny it.”
“And what would that something be? Plagiarism… treachery… abandonment…”
“It’s the latter that eats you up more than the others. Shall I tell you that this time I will stick around even though we both know it to be a lie? What point would there be in that?”
“Why does it have to be a lie? You could work with me.”
“Ha! You do not approve of my methods. You never have.”
“You have a crew digging right now. I knew it. This ‘break’ was just a distraction.” Indiana moved toward the entrance to the tent.
“I do not,” Belloq sighed and sat down on the bed. “I did, however, have one digging last night.”
Indiana turned to look at him. “Last night.”
“The Crown is heading to a buyer in Morocco as we speak.”
“So today was…”
“A bit of a break. I enjoy watching you work. Almost as much as I enjoy beating you.”
Indiana took a deep breath and then launched himself at Belloq. All the anger, all the frustration of the past six years came through as he rained blows on Belloq’s body. Belloq shoved Indiana with all of his might and the two tumbled off the bed onto the floor of the tent.
“Son of a bitch!” yelled Indy as Belloq’s elbow caught him in the mouth. He managed to get his knee up into Belloq’s stomach which broke René’s hold on him. Indy rolled onto his back, trying to catch his breath.
A hand touched his face and René rolled back into Indy’s line of vision. “I like seeing you wrecked,” he said and then his lips descended on Indiana’s. Despite the gentleness of the kiss, Indiana’s lips were still tender and even the slight pressure caused him to wince in pain.
Belloq pulled back slightly and they sat together for a moment in silence. Indiana got to his feet, straightened his clothing, and paused at the entrance of the tent.
“Goodbye, René.”
“Au revoir, Doctor Jones.”

Date: 2018-06-12 08:46 pm (UTC)I really enjoyed this. I loved visual image of a bare-chested Indy--I think Harrison Ford was at his sexual peak when he made this movie. And I loved the little twist of Belloq having already located the crown. It very much stays true to the tone of the movie(s).
Ooooh, that "au revoir" at the end was perfect, too. ;-)
I never really thought about pairing Indiana with Belloq, but I never really bought Indy's attraction to Marion, either, so this kind of makes sense. (Actually, I never really bought any of his romantic relationships in any of the movies--he always seemed like someone more interested in his work and obtaining whatever artifact than sex.)
Nice work!

Date: 2018-06-13 06:40 am (UTC)Belloq was one of my favorite characters in the series and probably the only one of the antagonists that really could give Indiana a run for his money. I remember when they said that "Temple of Doom" was going to be a prequel being so excited with the thought that they might be able to bring Belloq back. The back-and-forth between the two of them in the cafe scene is perfect and that part when Belloq sees the explosion and knows Indy's behind it is just one more way of showing how in sync the two of them are.
