I've lived in three cities in my life - St. Louis, Chicago, and now L.A. In my time living there, none of these cities have had hockey teams in contention for the Stanley Cup. Without being in the finals, the Cup never came to any of my home towns for the final 1, 2, 3 games of a playoff stint. I even made a pilgrimage to the Hall of Fame in Toronto to see it in 1987. The daggone thing had been sent to Edmonton (of all places!) for engraving, so, no luck there. I saw the original one, but it wasn't the same. The closest I'd been to seeing the Stanley Cup was an inflatable toy that my grandparents had picked up for my brother.
Until two nights ago (since it technically is the 17th when I'm posting this).
I had my tickets to the Kings-Blackhawks game (way up at the top of the Staples Center). Before the game I'm watching the practice when they show the announcers on the Jumbo-tron standing by what looks like the most impressive piece of hardware in North American sports. I say to myself "That looks like the (gd) Stanley Cup." Then I notice that the announcers are actually standing by the ice two sections directly below me and next to them, is, indeed the (gd) Stanley Cup.
There are times in my life I wish I had a camera phone and that was one of those times. I really cannot coherently express the sheer gorgeousness of it, it's very impressive. I have no idea why it was in L.A., I'm just glad I was there to see it. I called my brother and was giddy all over his voice mail, he probably thinks I had one too many beers before gametime.
And to top it all off, the Hawks came from behind to tie and then won during the shootout (It was ridiculously long - 6 shots for each side until it was decided, I thought they'd have to bring the backup goalies out to shoot if it went on much longer). If they don't trade Havlat during the off-season, they may have a shot at the playoffs next year.
Happy St. Patrick's Day to those who celebrate it.
