Spoilers ahead.

When Jake lands, there's chaos. He knows he'll probably hear it from the brass about disobeying orders, but the question of “What would Maverick do” had reverberated through his head until the answer became clear and he found himself flying off to play the hero.

But right now, he is safe. They all are safe and their mission a success. He finds himself jostled from one hug to another as Dagger squad closes around the three returning pilots.

A pair of strong arms encircle him from behind and then a voice drifts through the noise, sending a jolt through him. “I really want to kiss you right now.” He thinks he recognizes the voice and then writes it off almost immediately. Given all that's come before and the fact that their team has already had its share of miracles today, there's no way it could be the person he wants it to be.

The arms fall away and Jake turns with the confident smile that everyone expects from him. “Well, who wouldn't?” he asks, turning toward the voice.

“Who wouldn't what?” replies Cyclone.

Jake snaps to attention at the sight of the Air Boss. “Nothing, sir.”

“Lieutenant, a word.”

Apparently, Jake's time of celebration is over.

The lecture he receives is severe, but with Maverick, Rooster, and Hondo coming to his defense, a lecture is all that he gets. He's not going to look a gift horse in the mouth. Once he is dismissed, he heads to his room. The adrenaline has worn off and he's exhausted.

Bob's pacing the hallway outside of Jake's room. Jake is pleasantly surprised to see him there and that jolt goes through him again. When Bob notices his presence, Jake slips his mask back into place and pats him on the head. “Nice of you to wait up, sweetheart, but, as you can see, no one's put me in handcuffs. Yet.” The last is added with a wink as he unlocks the door to his room.

He steps inside, takes a deep breath, and turns back to Bob. “Something on your mind, Floyd?”

Bob nods, then follows Jake into the room. The room is barely big enough for one, let alone two. Jake sits down on the mattress and begins to take off his shoes.

“Why did you do that? Go after them against orders?” Bob asks.

“So they could come home. I just went through two hours of interrogation on that very question, so if you don't have anything more to add, let me get some sleep.”

“I could have lost you,” Bob whispers, so softly that Jake can barely hear it.

Jake's touched by the sentiment, but he covers, “Sweetheart, never doubt how good a pilot I am.”

“No. They could have grounded you or worse.”

“I know. There was a whole list of things that the Navy could have put into action, but they didn't. I'm still here to beat you at darts and at pool and at dogfight football and to generally make your life difficult.”

“It's a day for miracles,” Bob says. “Well, goodnight.” He reaches for the knob to open the door.
A day for miracles. Why the hell not? Jake thinks, then is off the bed, pressing his hand against the door, shutting it before Bob can go through. “When we were up on deck, did you say something to me?”

Bob's eyes widen.

Jake leans closer to him. “Something about wanting to kiss me?”

“Oh... well. I'm sure most of Dagger squad was feeling the same thing.”

“Oh... well. Most of Dagger squad isn't in my room right now.”

“I should leave.”

Jake takes his hand off the door. “You're free to go. Or...”

Bob surges forward, kissing Jake thoroughly until they pull apart, breathless. “I'm glad you're here to make my life difficult,” Bob says, as he opens the door. “Get some rest. We'll take this up again when we get home.”

Jake nods and watches Bob amble down the corridor to his own room. He closes the door and flops back on the bed. Sleep doesn't come as easily as he expects. Instead his mind races with thoughts of Bob and home and the future.

Today started off as a suicide mission and now they're all going home. A day for miracles, indeed.
