Great risks bring great rewards.
Or something like that. Ryan had heard it said once, a long time ago, and it had stuck. That’s one of the reasons that he’d traveled so far away from their territory tonight. He knew he was fairly close to where Schibetta’s camp was. Any little slice he could take from the Italians would just earn him a little more respect in his brother’s eyes.
Cyril didn’t know about the buy. He would have been dead set against it if he had known. Definitely wouldn’t have let Ryan go alone, that’s for sure. Ryan was sick of his brother treating him like he was a five-year-old. The gang was theirs, both of theirs. It was time for Cyril to let Ryan have a little more responsibility.
This buy seemed no different than those in his neighborhood. Meet a guy in an alley, third fire escape on the left, make the exchange and be on his way. Nothing to it. Only...
... in his neighborhood, buyers didn’t disappear in the middle of a deal.
It was then that Ryan turned and saw the car parked less than thirty feet away. Was it there before? He racked his brain, couldn’t remember.
The car doors opened and three men got out. Two of the regular guys, Rico and Bobby, he’d had run-ins with from time to time. And the third...
“Well, well, if it isn’t Dino Ortolani, fresh from the secretarial pool.”
“Have to say I’m a bit disappointed to see you here. I was hoping for your brother,” said Dino.
“I can go get him and come back.” Fucking Dagos wouldn’t stand a chance against Cyril in a fight.
Ortolani hit Ryan in the stomach, doubling him over. “You really shouldn’t be walking in this part of town, you might get hurt,” he warned, executing a sweep of O’Reily’s legs, knocking Ryan soundly on his ass.
Ryan glared up at Ortolani as Rico and Bobby laughed in the background. Ryan surged to his feet and charged, banging Dino hard into the fire escape. As Rico and Bobby were startled into movement, Ryan pushed off a dazed Ortolani and ran like hell.
And that’s when the trouble for Ryan really started. The problem with being in an unfamiliar area was that one never knew when a street would suddenly dead end. This was the case in this instance. Ryan attempted to double back, but stopped when he heard the approach of footsteps. Ryan moved back, blending into the shadows.
He could see only one man in the half-light of the alley. It was Ortolani. Belatedly Ryan wondered if all that time behind a desk had made Dino soft. Maybe Ryan would be able to take him.
“I called off the other two, O’Reily. Want this to be a fair fight. Just you and me.”
Ryan didn’t say anything, but he could see that Ortolani appeared to be telling the truth. It didn’t mean that Rico and Bobby weren’t lurking just around the corner, waiting for Ryan to come out.
“Think your brother would hide in the dark like a pussy?” Dino’s voice grew louder, coming incredibly close to Ryan’s hiding place. “Imagine when word gets out on the street that Ryan O’Reily is-“ He was cut off when Ryan took a swing at him. “Ow, son of a bitch.”
Dino reached for Ryan, pulling him out into the alley. The two of them started flailing at each other wildly, making contact as often as they missed. It would have gone on a while, except that Ortolani managed a lucky punch and a kick that sent Ryan falling to the ground.
Ryan couldn’t move. Dino sat on top of him, effectively pinning him to the ground as he went through Ryan’s pockets.
“Why do I think you didn’t come here empty-handed?”
“Get off me, motherfucker,” said Ryan attempting to move his legs.
Ortolani rooted through Ryan’s pockets until he came up with the stash. Ryan’s thought that Dino sure took his time searching him came hard on the heels of a physical reaction that had no place here in an alley with another man.
Ryan tried to sit up and move away, but was shoved back to the ground. Ortolani still hadn’t moved from his position on top of him.
“Whatsa matter?” Ryan asked. “You got your taste.”
An odd look crossed Dino’s face before he smiled and shook his head.
“What?” asked Ryan sharply.
Brown eyes locked with green as Dino leaned down and kissed him. Soft lips, a hint of tongue, and over before Ryan could react.
“Tell anybody about this and you’re a dead man, O’Reily.”
With that, Ortolani slammed Ryan’s head into the pavement.

Date: 2007-07-15 02:40 am (UTC)HA! That little exchange there made me laugh! Well, Dino deserved it. I am going to try to bring out as much of the humor as possible, because we all know how it's going to wind up. (But not for a long, LONG time)
Nice play on words there, "came hard on the heels"...
I honestly don't think that was intentional (but it is pretty funny).
I am so glad that you're liking it.
