This-n-that
Jul. 20th, 2007 09:07 pmHave I ever mentioned how much I despise writing sex scenes? Sometimes it works, others it's like swimming through sludge. I think it's part of the challenge to keep things new, but that means always trying to think of approaches that I haven't taken before. And that seems to be taking me to a point that can be a little bit limiting.
On a somewhat related note, it was fun to be able to see "Poison" again on the big screen. I was amazed at how much of an influence it had on me. I'm not recommending it to everyone because there are a couple of "avert your eyes"-type scenes in it. (In fact in the Aesthetics of Film" class where I first saw it, one of the students had a hissy fit after seeing the film and told the teacher that she shouldn't be showing that sort of thing in the class.)
Work has been a pain lately and wifey returns next Monday to make my life hell once again. All of our independent contractors have started to refuse to do last minute work for us, which means that Thursday afternoon, I wound up spending two hours plus out of the office on a special job. Apparently, they aren't wanting to make money.
I'm going to be in St. Louis again in a couple weeks (for my birthday). It'll be nice to see my family and I'm going to be going to at least one Cardinal game when I'm there (maybe a second, if we can get tickets for the Dodgers game). I was thinking today how lucky I've been to have had the opportunity to listen to three of the greatest commentators on the game - Jack Buck in St. Louis, Harry Carey in Chicago, and now Vin Scully here in L.A. (I'm listening to him now actually). And I get my Jeannie Zelasco fix tomorrow (okay, so that one's really not about baseball).
I still can't wait for hockey season though. Six weeks or so until training camp starts.
I still haven't decided whether or not to see "I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry". I'm torn between being really offended and thinking it's really funny.
Quote of the day for all you HP fanatics (taken from ESPN.com's Page 2 - AM Jump - W2W4):
"Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows" goes on sale: Midnight
I don't tend to read a lot of sports books -- you know, except for this awesome one, but if you want to read a book about the sport of quidditch, the Harry Potter series is the best there is. (Oh, and spoiler alert: Harry Potter dies at the end by choking to death on an onion ring while listening to Journey.)

I keep thinking what's going to happen when Vin Scully dies? The Dodger broadcasts would never be the same...

I knew it! LOL

Date: 2007-07-21 07:43 am (UTC)I don't think I know the movie "Poison".What is it about, and what is objectionable about it?
On a different note-I had similar feelings about the "Chuck and Larry" movie, but I decided after seeing the last promos that I found it offensive. If you do see it,please let me know your opinion !
Thanks for including the Harry Potter quote that was funny! I especially liked the "choking to death on an oniion ring while listening to Journey" part!
Was he in a diner in New Jersey?

Poison is a Todd Haines film with three interwoven stories - Hero, Homo, and Horror. Hero deals with a young boy who shot his father and "flew away". Homo is based on the works of Jean Genet (prison sex). Horror takes a 50s sci-fi look at the AIDS crisis. It's a technically beautiful film, but there's one scene in "Horror" that's just gross (think the Croenenberg version of "The Fly") and this weird spitting scene in "Homo" that might be considered in some circles as erotic, but in mine, not so much.
As for sex scenes, the defining factor is that no matter what I do, it has to turn me on before I can believe it will work on anybody else. And the other thing I rely on is the imagination of the reader - there's no need to tell everything. Generally, I can read about two paragraphs of descriptive smut action before I'm bored out of my mind so I try to keep the physical side to a minimum and concentrate more on the mental and emotional.
