Clean and sober. That was the party line. They wanted her clean and sober.

It was a strange word, Dani thought. Clean.

As if getting off the drugs was going to make everything pure again. The drugs were clean. They took away the filth of the world, blanked her mind. While she was under their spell, she could escape visions of the dead boy in the dumpster behind the Vons, wilted lettuce clinging to his face. She could blot out the woman sitting in the lobby, crying into her handkerchief, bruises visible on her shoulders. They helped her to erase the sound of her partner’s voice, which echoed in her mind, again and again.

“Reese, I don’t like you like this.”

The drugs protected her, kept her in the moment.

And in the moment, she was clean.

Thank you. I always picture that drugs operate one of a couple ways, either they mellow you out, or they flash in your brain like quick cuts in a movie. I chose the latter one for this, hence the repeat of "the moment" as something that she could try to seize and couldn't quite capture.

I really like this insight into Dani and her reason for using drugs. I can understand her,having worked in social services for so long. Sometimes you really don't want to see things that clearly.
I liked the image of her trying to stay in the momennt.But I got the sense that sometimes(like when she sees the things she mentions)she doesn't want to be in the moment. She wants to be somewhere else. Definitely can relate to that feeling!
